Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is projected to achieve its first-ever profitable quarter following a massive surge in demand, defying widespread industry skepticism regarding the immediate financial viability of generative AI.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the San Francisco-based company expects revenue to skyrocket by 130% to reach $10.9 billion for the June quarter. This staggering growth is anticipated to deliver Anthropic its first operating profit of $559 million.
The projected figures translate to an annualized revenue run rate of approximately $44 billion. The Wall Street Journal noted that the milestone comes amidst an ongoing funding round that is expected to value the startup above its chief rival, OpenAI.
Anthropic generated $4.8 billion in sales in the first quarter. Its quarterly revenue is now growing faster than Zoom's during the pandemic and Google's and Facebook's, now Meta, in the run-up to their initial public offerings, WSJ reported.
The rapid path to profitability underscores an accelerating shift in how enterprises adopt generative AI technologies, with corporate clients increasingly turning to Anthropic's platform for large-scale integration.
The growth numbers provide a stark counter to the narrative that the massive capital expenditures required to build and maintain advanced AI models would delay profitability for years.
AI-related capex has also been among the key talking points for the latest quarterly earnings of mega-cap tech companies, including Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon.
Data from the Ramp AI Index revealed that Anthropic beat OpenAI in enterprise business adoption for the first time in May. The index shows that 34.4% of tracked businesses use Anthropic, compared to 32.3% using OpenAI, following a year when Anthropic's adoption quadrupled, according to tracking data from Cleverhack.
OpenAI is planning to go public as soon as September, according to media reports, marking a highly anticipated milestone as the artificial intelligence space prepares itself for several high-profile IPOs, including SpaceX and Anthropic, due this year.
The San Francisco-based creator of ChatGPT is actively preparing for an initial public offering and might file a formal filing as early as Friday for its IPO which is expected to list on September at a valuation of $1 trillion, as per the FT and WSJ.
Anthropic is considering going public as soon as in October this year, Bloomberg reported earlier in March.
In other news, Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI’s co-founder and who previously led AI at Tesla, joined Anthropic.
