Apple’s vice president of fitness technologies, Jay Blahnik, is reportedly retiring this summer after a nearly 13-year tenure at the technology giant.
In an email to employees this week, Apple said Blahnik, 57, will retire in July “to spend time with his family and make an exciting move to New York City, according to the New York Times.
Blahnik’s career was marred by several controversies and accusations that included that he created a toxic workplace culture and sexually harassed an employee, as per the report. Blahnik was described by current and former employees as verbally abusive, manipulative and inappropriate, The New York Times previously reported. Since 2022, more than 10 of the roughly 100 employees on his team sought extended mental health or medical leaves of absence.
Apple confirmed Blahnik’s retirement to the newspaper.
The high-profile executive was a key figure in the company’s expansion into fitness technology and services.
Blahnik joined Apple in 2013 and played a key role in developing the Apple Watch’s signature fitness features. He later led the Fitness+ subscription service, which offers video and audio workouts for activities like cycling, meditation, and yoga.
Before joining Apple, Blahnik was a well-known fitness expert and author, having spent 20 years working with Nike. He is credited with designing the Apple Watch’s hallmark fitness feature: three rings users can close each day by exercising, standing, and burning calories.
