The Gates Foundation has announced plans to shut down its operations by the end of 2045 as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Bill Gates, who co-founded the foundation with his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, announced the news in a blog post.
The Microsoft founder, with a net worth of $108 billion, revealed that he will give away 99% of his wealth over the next 20 years. Gates expects to give away around $200 billion through the Gates Foundation, although the exact amount could vary, depending on stock price and inflation.
“This decision comes at a moment of reflection for me. In addition to celebrating the foundation’s 25th anniversary, this year also marks several other milestones,” Gates said.
The billionaire has an expiration date for the Gates Foundation – Dec. 31, 2045. He would be over 90 years old by the time the foundation shuts down forever, Microsoft would turn 70, and his father, who helped him start his philanthropy journey, would have been 120.
Gates also sought to separate himself from other rich people and is determined not to want people to say “he died rich.”
“There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people.”
On Trump’s Aid Cuts
In an interview with the New York Times, Gates scathingly critiqued President Donald Trump’s aid cuts to poor nations, especially those in Africa.
The billionaire-turned-philanthropist said that there could be millions of additional deaths of children due to Trump’s cuts.
For instance, he highlighted the fact that the Trump administration cut aid to the Gaza province in Mozambique, mistaking it for the Gaza city in Palestine.
“The people doing the cutting are so geographically illiterate, they think it’s Gaza and condoms. Will they go meet those babies who got H.I.V. because that money was cut? Probably not,” he said.
The billionaire also took a swing at Elon Musk, saying the world’s richest man has been “involved in the deaths of the world’s poorest children.”
