In a step towards tackling rising vehicular pollution, Delhi will stop the supply of fuel to old and polluting vehicles from July 1. As per the new rule, petrol pumps across the capital will no longer refuel ‘end-of-life (EoL) vehicles’ - petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years.

The action follows directions issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Enforcement is being jointly handled by the Delhi Transport Department, Delhi Police, and traffic personnel.

To identify these vehicles, the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) has taken charge of managing Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. These cameras will “automatically capture and display the registration details of every vehicle entering the fuel station and identify End-of-Life vehicles in real time,” as per the SOP issued earlier by the Delhi government.

At least 380 teams have been formed, covering refilling stations in the national capital, according to a report in The Times of India. Each outlet will have two ANPR cameras and a signboard reading: “Fuel will not be dispensed to end-of-life vehicles. By order: Delhi Government.”
