  • Corning will increase its U.S.-based optical connectivity manufacturing capacity by 10x.
  • Corning’s expanded capacity will supply the optical connectivity that hyperscale data centers use to deploy NVIDIA-accelerated computing at scale.
  • To expand production capacity, three new advanced manufacturing facilities will be built, creating more than 3,000 high-paying American jobs.

Shares of Gorilla glass maker Corning Inc. (GLW) surged over 18% in Wednesday’s premarket trading and are on track to open at an all-time high after the company struck a landmark partnership with chip giant NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) to expand the production capacity of optical connectivity solutions by tenfold in the United States to address the ongoing artificial intelligence infrastructure demand.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, according to an SEC filing, Corning has issued warrants to NVIDIA to purchase up to 15 million GLW shares at $180 per share, and has issued pre-funded warrants to purchase up to 3 million GLW shares, for $500 million.

The deal comes amid surging demand for AI compute power, which in turn has created an industry-wide shortage of components required to build a data centers, as hyperscalers rush to build facilities to maintain their dominance in the lucrative sector.

Zooming In On The NVDA-GLW Deal

Under the multiyear commercial and technology partnership between the companies, Corning will also boost its U.S. fiber production capacity by more than 50% and construct three new manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Texas. The new facilities will create 3,000 new “high-paying American jobs.”

Optical connectivity is crucial for AI data centers as it links components within the infrastructure to allow high-speed networking with low latency.

“Corning’s expanded capacity will supply the optical connectivity hyperscale data centers use to deploy NVIDIA-accelerated computing at scale,” the companies said in a joint statement. “Modern AI workloads require thousands of NVIDIA GPUs – requiring unprecedented volumes of high-performance optical fiber, connectivity, and photonics to move data at extraordinary speed and scale.”

Last month, Nokia (NOK) said in its earnings report that its optical networking business saw explosive growth from AI data center buildout, which led it to increase investments in the business to keep up with the demand.
