Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly said in a statement on Thursday that the Persian Gulf will see a “future without America.”
Khamenei’s statement was posted in commemoration of the National Persian Gulf Day that celebrates the expulsion of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622.
“Today, two months after the world’s biggest campaign and aggression in the region and America’s shameful failure in its own plan, a new chapter is emerging in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” Khamenei said, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
This also comes amid President Donald Trump’s plans to extend the blockade of Iranian ports until the country gives up its nuclear ambitions. “The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig. And it is going to be worse for them. They can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told Axios in an interview on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, crude oil prices edged lower on Thursday after rising to near all-time highs. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures expiring in June were down nearly 0.3%, hovering around $107 a barrel. Brent crude futures expiring in June fell 0.2% to hover around $110 a barrel.
