The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund (USO) ETF</a> also dropped more than 4% during the session.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Oil’s Wild Reversal Jolts Energy Markets</h2>Oil prices plunged after Trump said the Iran war could end “pretty quickly,” adding that the U.S. may waive oil sanctions and deploy naval escorts for tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global crude shipments.The remarks triggered a sharp reversal after both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude had surged on fears the conflict could disrupt oil flows through the chokepoint. Global benchmark Brent swung in an intraday range of about $36, the widest since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, as traders also weighed the possibility of major economies releasing oil from strategic reserves.The volatility comes as the two-week conflict continues to disrupt energy markets and push U.S. gasoline prices to their highest level since August 2024.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analysts Say Pullback Is Profit-Taking</h2>Despite the sudden reversal, some analysts argued that the broader oil rally may still have room to run. Economist Peter Schiff&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/PeterSchiff/status/2031102395636134267">said on X</a> that crude reversed sharply from overnight highs after traders reacted first to talk of a coordinated release from strategic petroleum reserves and then to Trump’s comments suggesting the war could end soon.“These stories drove profit-taking, but the trend is still up,” Schiff said.&nbsp;Former JPMorgan strategist Marko Kolanovic also&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/markoinny/status/2031192295672811526">noted on X</a> that much of the selling appeared driven by systematic trading strategies hitting stop-loss levels after the rapid rally. He said the oil trend remains positive and that commodity trading advisors could re-establish long positions if geopolitical risks persist.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fuel Price Outlook Begins To Shift</h2>Patrick De Haan, a petroleum analyst at GasBuddy,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2031196367666786462">said on X</a> that the U.S. national average diesel price has climbed to about $4.73 per gallon, while&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2031195919039836562">gasoline averages</a> roughly $3.53 per gallon.However, if crude continues to trade below the recent spike levels, gasoline prices could stabilize or even start easing by the end of the week, De Haan said. The U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures expiring in April soared to a new 52-week high of $119.43 a barrel before cooling down slightly to hover at nearly $96 at the time of writing.Brent crude futures expiring in May also rose to a new 52-week high of $119.46 a barrel before paring some of the gains to hover near the $100 mark.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund ETF</a> (USO) was up more than 5%, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UCO">ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Crude Oil ETF</a> (UCO) was over 6% at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Markets Start Pricing In A Longer Disruption, Say Analysts</h2>Analysts at ING Think stated in a recent note that markets are beginning to price in a longer supply disruption amid the intensifying Iran war.“The longer this goes on, the more supply we will see shut-in. This is a concern for markets. Even if flows through the Strait of Hormuz start to resume, it will take time for upstream production to ramp up,” the firm stated.The combination of production shut-ins and no signs of de-escalation in the conflict is forcing the market to increasingly price in the risk of a prolonged supply disruption. Unless oil shipments resume through the Strait of Hormuz, prices are likely to keep rising, ING Think added.Meanwhile, U.S. equities declined in Monday morning’s trade. Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was reported to have targeted a commercial tanker in the Gulf with a drone attack as well as a fuel depot in Kuwait.Analysts have warned that the crisis will push prices even higher, with JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs flagging significant upside risks due to supply disruptions. Qatar’s energy minister said oil prices could reach $150 per barrel if Gulf exporters are forced to halt production.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Saudi Arabia Cuts Oil Production</h2>Saudi Arabia has started cutting oil production, according to a Bloomberg report on Monday. The Gulf nation is the world’s largest oil exporter, producing about 10 million barrels of crude per day and exporting roughly seven million barrels.Saudi state oil giant Aramco has diverted some shipments to Yanbu on the Red Sea through an alternative pipeline, but the route cannot fully replace exports normally sent through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane that transports 20% of the global oil supply.Hormuz has been effectively closed after Iran threatened vessels passing through the narrow waterway. The disruption has also forced other Gulf producers, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq, to cut output.<h2 class="st-heading-2">France To Explore Joint Mission To Escort Ships Through Hormuz</h2>Meanwhile, France is set to deploy about a dozen naval vessels, including an aircraft carrier strike group, to the Mediterranean and Red Sea, and potentially the Strait of Hormuz, to support allies amid the Middle East conflict. President Emmanuel Macron said the deployment will include eight warships, an aircraft carrier group, and two helicopter carriers.Macron also proposed a joint international maritime mission to escort commercial ships and tankers, stating that the goal is to gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz once the most intense phase of the conflict subsides.However, Ali Larijani, Iran’s secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said it is unlikely that any security will be achieved in the Strait of Hormuz.At the time of writing, Brent crude futures for May 2026 deliveries were up nearly 7% to $99 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contracts expiring in May 2026 traded higher by around 7% at $92.7 per barrel.ETFs tracking oil prices gained sharply on Monday.&nbsp;The <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund (USO)</a> gained 6% to its highest levels since October 2018. Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was reported to have targeted a commercial tanker in the Gulf with a drone attack as well as a fuel depot in Kuwait.Last Friday, Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi warned the Financial Times that Gulf exporters may have to halt production within days, potentially driving oil prices to $150 per barrel.JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. had earlier estimated that Saudi Arabia could run out of oil and fuel storage capacity within a little over two months if the conflict continues.
