Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly said in a Cabinet meeting attended by President Donald Trump on Tuesday that his department will announce "interventions" that he believes are causing autism.

"We will have announcements as promised in September," Kennedy said, as reported by NBC News. The Health Secretary said that the department is finding interventions that are “almost certainly causing autism” and said the announcement in September will address them.

Kennedy is a prominent anti-vaccine activist. He had claimed during the pandemic that childhood vaccinations could lead to autism. In a January 2021 post on X, he said Hank Aaron’s death about two weeks after he received Moderna, Inc.’s (MRNA) mRNA vaccine is part of a "wave of suspicious deaths among elderly closely following administration of #COVID #vaccines."

He also fired members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s panel of vaccine experts in June. "Today we are prioritizing the restoration of public trust above any specific pro- or anti-vaccine agenda," Kennedy said in a statement then.

Earlier this month, his department also announced plans to cancel $500 million in funding for mRNA vaccines under development to treat diseases such as the flu.

“BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority) is terminating 22 mRNA vaccine development investments because the data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu. We’re shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate,” Kennedy said about the decision. “We reviewed the science, listened to the experts, and acted,” he added.
