  • Investors awaited April CPI data that could shape expectations around the Federal Reserve’s rate path.
  • All eyes are on Trump’s Beijing visit later this week, where discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to include trade, artificial intelligence, export controls, Taiwan, and the Iran conflict. 
  • On the geopolitical front, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was on “massive life support” and floated reviving “Project Freedom” to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing blockade concerns. 

U.S. stock futures were under pressure early Tuesday as investors braced for the April Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. According to reports, headline inflation is projected to climb toward 3.7%. The cautious start comes after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs on Monday.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is slated to visit China this Wednesday, accompanied by a whole host of industry CEOs, including Elon Musk (Tesla), Tim Cook (Apple), Larry Fink (BlackRock), and Sanjay Mehrotra (Micron). 

On the geopolitical front, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was on “massive life support” and floated reviving “Project Freedom” to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing blockade concerns. 

As of 4:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday: Nasdaq futures took the lead, declining 0.7%, while S&P 500 futures fell 0.4% and Dow futures declined 0.2%. Russell 2000 futures edged 0.5% lower. 

Retail sentiment toward the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the S&P 500 Index, has remained in the ‘bullish’ territory, while the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) ETF, which tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index, has moderated to ‘neutral’ from ‘bullish’ a day ago.

Micron (MU): The stock remains on retail radar as CEO Sanjay Mehrotra joins Trump’s China delegation amid a massive AI-driven ‘memory supercycle.’ 

Tesla (TSLA): Stock fell 2% in early re-market trade even as Elon Musk was invited to the China summit. The EV maker’s China woes are in the spotlight after a 9.7% dip in April retail sales and concerns over its pending FSD approval there. 

Hims & Hers (HIMS) stock cracked 16% in early premarket after a Q1 earnings miss, though one analyst noted that its GLP-1 ties make it a "disruptor." 

Quantum Computing Inc (QUBT): Shares surged 13% in early pre-market trade after Q1 revenue skyrocketed to $3.7M, driven by acquisitions. 

AST SpaceMobile Inc. (ASTS) stock fell 13% in early pre-market trade following an earnings miss and skepticism over the execution of its aggressive satellite deployment timeline. 

Gamestop (GME) shares are under pressure in early premarket trade after new rumors about CEO Ryan Cohen. Investors noticed eBay was listed in GameStop’s investor materials, fueling speculation about a possible acquisition.

SoFi Technologies (SOFI): The fintech stock is in the spotlight after reports that the company is set to acquire most of the U.K.-based investing platform PrimaryBid. Investor sentiment also improved after CEO Anthony Noto increased his personal stake in the company.

BuzzFeed Inc (BZFD) stock soared over 120% in premarket trade following news that media mogul Byron Allen has agreed to take a majority stake in the company. 

Other tickers trending on Stocktwits at the time of writing included AbCelera Biologics (ABCL), Wendy’s Co (WEN), and Intel Corp (INTC).

Other Catalysts To Watch

On the economic front, investors will be tracking the April CPI release at 8:30 am ET for clues on the Federal Reserve’s rate path. 

On earnings radar, watch out for quarterly reports from D-Wave Quantum (QBTS), Sea Ltd. (SE), Under Armour (UAA), Imunon (IMNN), and Netlist (NLST) before the bell, while Oklo (OKLO), Hyliion (HYLN), Sphere 3D (ANY), and ZenaTech (ZENA), among others, report after market close today.
