  • Eleven onboard cameras will monitor Orion internally and externally, including solar array inspections.
  • Sun Sensor assemblies from Redwire support solar array alignment and power management.
  • The Artemis II mission marks NASA’s first human lunar flight since 1972, launching four astronauts.

Redwire Corp. (RDW) is preparing to play a key role in NASA’s next lunar mission, supplying critical imaging and navigation technologies for the Artemis II flight, which will carry astronauts for the first time under the Artemis program.

The company said its advanced camera systems and sun sensor technology will be integrated into the Orion spacecraft for the upcoming Artemis II mission through its work with prime contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT).

Critical Imaging Systems Onboard

The effort builds on earlier contributions to Artemis I. For Artemis II, Redwire is delivering a suite of 11 cameras designed for both internal monitoring and external inspection. These include units mounted on Orion’s solar arrays, enabling real-time observation of spacecraft components during flight.

“You may have heard the phrase, ‘the camera is the mission,’ which certainly still resonates today. I am so proud that Redwire is providing its trusted and flight-proven imaging and navigation technology for Artemis II, which will play a vital role in this historic endeavor.”

-Mike Gold, President of Redwire Space

Redwire stock traded over 4% higher on Wednesday morning. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the stock shifted to ‘bearish’ from ‘neutral’ the previous day, amid ‘low’ message volume.

Sun Sensor Technology For Power Management

Alongside its camera systems, Redwire is providing Coarse Sun Sensor assemblies for Orion’s European Service Module under a separate agreement with Airbus. These sensors play a crucial role in managing solar array alignment by supplying data that helps orient the spacecraft’s panels toward the sun.

The sensors, which also flew on Artemis I, are designed with redundancy to ensure consistent performance during the mission.

Artemis II is scheduled to take off at 6.24 p.m. ET on Wednesday, carrying four astronauts on an approximately 10-day lunar orbit mission, NASA’s first human voyage since 1972.

RDW stock has gained over 11% year-to-date.
