Trump Administration Nears Pact With South Korea On AI, Quantum Computing, And 6G: Report

The Trump administration is reportedly set to seal a deal with South Korea focusing on collaboration for artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and 6G technologies.

According to a Bloomberg News report, citing a U.S. official, the deal between the two countries would likely be signed on Wednesday by Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios.

The report added that this is an attempt to compete with China. The official told Bloomberg that the U.S. and South Korea will be working to “strengthen” export controls for AI as well as ease regulatory hurdles for tech companies, aiming to facilitate more seamless data storage and usage across global regions.

Trump’s Asia Visit

U.S. President Donald Trump is on a visit to a few prominent Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. The tour, which started in Malaysia, saw Trump sign deals with Malaysia and Cambodia that included eliminating or significantly reducing tariffs on a wide range of U.S. exports.

President Trump also inked reciprocal trade frameworks with Thailand and Vietnam. Under the two frameworks, the two countries will address tariff barriers on a range of U.S. goods and provide preferential market access for U.S. industrial and agricultural exports, the White House said.

Trump is also set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Thursday. Trump also signaled that he would be meeting Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang on Wednesday, while praising him at a reception with business leaders in Japan.

The South Korea Deal

Bloomberg noted that the deal with South Korea is aimed at improving biotechnology and pharmaceutical supply chains, bolstering research security, protecting quantum technology advances and promoting partnerships involving space and 6G telecom technology.

The report said that the U.S. official did not identify which companies might be involved as part of the deal.

Meanwhile, U.S. equities rose on Tuesday morning’s trade. At the time of writing, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), which tracks the S&P 500 index, was up marginally, the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ) rose 0.34%, while the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (DIA) gained 0.35%.
