(NVDA) and its kindred, even as the Jensen Huang-led company was quick to defend itself to the Wall Street community.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVDA">Nvidia’s stock</a> has been&nbsp;on a volatile ride ever since the AI bubble fears intensified. The stock has shed about 10% so far this month.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Nvidia Rushes To Defend Itself</h2>The whole saga started as Burry, who came down heavily upon hyperscalers, criticising their capex spending and depreciation accounting following his social-media return in late October, weighed in on Nvidia’s stock-based compensation (SBC) accounting. His&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/michael-burry-tears-into-nvidia-after-q3/cLPAPKIRE9e">Nvidia comments</a> came shortly after the company reported stellar third-quarter results.Aside from Burry’s attacks, market participants also raised concerns about the spike in the company’s days sales outstanding (DSO), which is the average number of days taken by the company to collect payment after a credit sale.Over the weekend, Nvidia reportedly shared a seven-page memo with Wall Street analysts that addressed&nbsp;sceptical investors' claims,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/nvidia-stock-ai-accounting-allegations-366f16ac?mod=RTA">according</a> to Barron’s. The memo reportedly cited Burry’s X post and a Substack&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://substack.com/home/post/p-179453867">post</a> by Shanaka Perera entitled “The Algorithm That Detected a $610 Billion Fraud: How Machine Intelligence Exposed the AI Industry’s Circular Financing Scheme” as source documents.&nbsp;In the memo, Nvidia responded to each of the allegations, including concerns about share repurchases, accounts receivable, and inventory. Among its arguments is that Burry’s Nvidia stock buyback number since 2018 was off by about $20 billion, and that he has included restricted stock unit (RSU) taxes in his calculations. The company&nbsp;said repurchases since 2018 were well below intrinsic volume, creating “substantial” value for shareholders. This is a pushback against Burry’s claim that the company understated SBC, inflating owners’ earnings by 50%.Nvidia also contended in the memo that the current allegations are analogous to “historical accounting frauds (Enron, WorldCom, Lucent) that featured vendor financing and SPVs [special purpose vehicles].”“NVIDIA does not resemble historical accounting frauds because NVIDIA’s underlying business is economically sound, our reporting is complete and transparent, and we care about our reputation for integrity,” the memo said. “Unlike Enron, NVIDIA does not use Special Purpose Entities to hide debt and inflate revenue.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sticks To Stance</h2>While making note of Nvidia’s private clarification to Wall Street, Burry, who shot to prominence with his accurate and prescient prediction of the 2008 housing market collapse, said, “I stand by my analysis. Obviously, the full analysis does not fit in a tweet. I will release on my timeline.”The “Big Short” fame investor said his first Substack post, entitled “The Heretic’s Guide to AI’s Stars ‘Supply-Side Gluttony,” is a light read. “The second in the Heretic series will be a heavier lift.”While sharing screenshots of Nvidia’s memo, Barron’s senior tech writer Tae Kim said, “Nvidia should have published this in an 8-K filing instead of just emailing a memo to Wall Street sell-side analysts.”Social media users’ reaction was mixed. Insiders have now sprung into action, offloading some of their stake.Scion’s 13F, filed with the SEC on Nov. 3, disclosed put options on Palantir, with the underlying shares valued at $912.10 million. Burry went on record, saying the bearish bet on Palantir cost him $9.2 million, and not $912 million as the media stated.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Offloading In Droves</h2>A series of Form 144 filings with the SEC showed that company executives led by co-founder and CEO Alex Karp have proposed selling Palantir shares worth $207 million. A Form 144 is a notice filed with the SEC that informs the public of an insider's intent to sell restricted or control securities. It is required when an individual plans to sell more than 5,000 shares or securities valued at over $50,000 in three months.Karp has filed to sell 585,000 Palantir shares, valued at $95.93 million. His previous divestment was in late August when he disposed of 186,194 shares valued at $29 million. Director Stephen Cohen proposed selling 405,000 shares at $66.41 per share. This time around, he chose to launch a tirade against artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), capitalizing on the interest surrounding the company amid its quarterly results announcement.&nbsp;Nvidia's stock rose more than 5% in extended trading following its <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/nvidia-torches-ai-bubble-talk-with-blowout-q3/cLPqCIORE9c">blowout quarter</a>.&nbsp;That comes as much-needed relief as fears of an AI bubble have dented sentiment toward the broader market and tech sector. The<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a> and the<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/QQQ">&nbsp;Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)</a>, the exchange-traded funds tracking the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 indices, have lost about 3% and 4.6%, respectively, since the start of November.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Questioning Nvidia’s Accounting?</h2>Burry, credited with accurately predicting the 2018 housing market collapse, said in a late Wednesday post on X that Nvidia’s stock-based compensation (SBC) since the beginning of 2018 was $20.5 billion. SBC is a non-cash payment to employees made in the form of stock and options.&nbsp;Burry contends that Nvidia’s SBC during the period would have been much more. He noted that the Jensen Huang-led company repurchased $112.5 billion in stock during the period, yet there are 47 million more shares outstanding than before. The hedge fund manager believes the actual cost of SBC dilution was $112.5 billion, not the $20.5 billion the company used.Nvidia earned $205 billion in net income and $188 billion in free cash flow, assuming all capital expenditure (capex) was growth capex, Burry said. With the $112.5 billion SBC dilution, Nvidia’s earnings for the period may have been cut by 50%, he added.&nbsp;Some social media users, however, did not buy this argument, with one arguing that Burry double-counted the dilution.<img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Screenshot_2025_11_19_at_11_17_24_PM_png_41dac9c775.webp" alt="Screenshot 2025-11-19 at 11.17.24 PM.png"><h2 class="st-heading-2">The Circular Deals</h2>Burry also shared a chart titled "How Nvidia and OpenAI Fuel the AI Money Machine" based on Bloomberg news reports on X, which visualizes the interconnected web of investments, partnerships, services, and capital flows in the AI ecosystem, totaling over $1 trillion in value. The companies featured in the chart, apart from the titular names, include Microsoft, AMD, Oracle, CoreWeave, Elon Musk's xAI and even smaller AI players such as Mistral and Figure AI."Every company listed below has suspicious revenue recognition. The actual chart with ALL the give-and-take deals would be unreadable. The future will regard this a picture of fraud, not a flywheel," Burry wrote. "True end demand is ridiculously small. In turn, Nvidia and Microsoft have decided to invest up to $10 billion and up to $5 billion, respectively, in Anthropic.&nbsp;Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shrugged off the risk on the company’s earnings call late Wednesday, saying the chipmaker sees something different. He also said Nvidia’s balance sheet is sufficient to support its partners and that all investments are aimed at expanding the reach of its CUDA systems.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Extending Useful Life</h2>Burry, who earlier called out hyperscalers such as Oracle, Meta, and Baidu for artificially boosting profits by extending the useful life of AI infrastructure assets, offered more clarity on his thinking. “The idea of a useful life for depreciation being longer because chips from more than 3 to 4 years ago are fully booked confuses physical utilization with value creation,” Burry said. While recent posts on X and his teaser for the launch of a venture on Sept.25 have confirmed that he stayed tuned to the market, the confirmation came via an email to Bloomberg.Burry emerged from a nearly two-year-long self-imposed social media exile in late October and has been brisk in his engagements since.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Still Active</h2>In an emailed reply to Bloomberg, Burry&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-11-18/burry-says-he-s-active-in-markets-after-fund-is-deregistered">said</a>, “I am still running my money and active in markets.” He also clarified that Scion Asset Management was virtually a “family-and-friends” fund. “This last go-around was always essentially a friends and family fund,” he said. “I didn’t market it or treat it like most do, and I wasn’t trying to grow assets by acquiring investors I didn’t already know. I didn’t want the problems I had the first go around with Scion Capital.”Scion Capital, which Burry founded in November 2020, shot to fame when its founder had the prescience to accurately predict the subprime mortgage crisis and the subsequent housing market collapse, and also profited from his bearish bet. He subsequently wound down the fund in 2008 due to public backlash over his schemes and numerous audits from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Burry established Scion Asset Management in 2013 as a multi-strategy fund and invested in assets such as equities, derivatives, and fixed income instruments.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Burry Sounds AI Alarm</h2>The second time did not prove to be a charm&nbsp;either, as he deregistered the fund. This came amid Burry's warnings about reckless investment in cloud, data center, and AI. After a cryptic post on “bubbles” in late October, he warned that hyperscalers were artificially boosting profits by extending the useful life of AI infrastructure assets.Around the same time, Scion Asset Management disclosed large bearish positions in Nvidia and Palantir. Burry later clarified media reports about his Palantir bet. If the after-hours gains hold, the stock is on track to record its best day in five months.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Drove GRRR’s After-hours Gains</h2>U.K.-based Gorilla Tech reported break-even results on a reported basis for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025 compared to a loss of $0.66 reported for the last year’s quarter. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.26, down from the $0.29 reported a year ago.
