<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>MARA reported a net loss of $3.31 per share against expectations of $2.34 per share.</li><li>Reports unrealized losses tied to its 38,689 bitcoin holdings.</li><li>Energy cost per bitcoin was $40,047 in Q1 2026, up from $35,728 in Q1 2025.&nbsp;</li></ul>MARA Holdings (MARA) stock dropped 4% after-hours after the bitcoin miner reported an 18% drop in revenue and higher-than-expected losses as investments in power and AI data centers did little to offset harsh bitcoin mining economics.&nbsp;For the quarter ended March 31, 2026, MARA reported an adjusted net loss of $1.3 billion, or $3.31 per diluted share, against analyst expectations of an adjusted loss of $2.24 per share.The miner reported a net loss of $533.4 million, or $1.55 per share, in the same period last year.&nbsp;The wider loss was primarily driven by a $1 billion unfavorable mark-to-market adjustment on its bitcoin holdings, following a 22% decline in the price of the digital asset during the quarter.&nbsp;Total revenue for the quarter fell 18% to $174.6 million, down from $213.9 million in the prior-year period, with the crypto mining company attributing the decline largely to an 18% decrease in the average price of bitcoin and a slight dip in total bitcoin production.&nbsp;Geopolitical conflicts in Iran, persistent inflation, higher-for-longer interest rates, and a general risk-off institutional investor mindset pushed bitcoin prices lower in the first three months of this year.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">MARA’s AI Pivot</h2>The company’s AI pivot is anchored by its joint venture with Starwood and the acquisition of a majority stake in Exaion. While the Starwood joint venture addresses the large-scale, hyperscale end of the AI infrastructure market, Exaion addresses a different but complementary segment, which is sovereign, enterprise, and private cloud AI compute.&nbsp;Despite the financial headwinds, MARA Chairman and CEO Fred Thiel characterized the period as a "redefining quarter". The company is aggressively moving beyond its roots as a pure-play bitcoin miner to become a leader in digital infrastructure, specifically targeting high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.&nbsp;“We believe the next phase of digital infrastructure value creation will be shaped by control of power," Thiel said in a letter to shareholders, noting that AI adoption is currently outstripping the available power supply.&nbsp;MARA announced the acquisition of Long Ridge Energy &amp; Power, which includes a 505 MW power plant and 1,600 acres of land for a premier data center campus in its effort to make the shift to AI data centers.&nbsp;“Power is the most important input, and we want to deploy it across the highest-value applications. MARA Stock Drops As AI Expansion Plans Fail To Calm Bloated Net Loss

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Waller said that the central bank is planning to roll out its ‘skinny master accounts’ proposal before the end of the year.&nbsp;</li><li>On the CLARITY bill, Waller said there is a lot of opposition to what lawmakers want to do on things.</li><li>Bitcoin price at the time of writing fell nearly 1%.</li></ul>Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Monday that clarity on cryptocurrency regulation seems to be stalled in the U.S. Congress as uncertainty over the passing of the CLARITY bill continues to loom.&nbsp;Speaking at a conference in La Jolla, California, hosted by the Global Interdependence Center, Waller said that the initial optimism that lifted cryptocurrency prices following President Donald Trump’s election appears to be fading as the sector is experiencing a significant selloff.&nbsp;"Some of the euphoria that came into the crypto world with the current administration, some of that’s kind of fading," Waller said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Clarity Stalled</h2>“Right now, CLARITY seems to be sort of stalled in the Congress. There's a lot of opposition to what they want to do on things, and they can't seem to break through and finish and I think that's part of the reason there are some disruptions in this crypto world,” Waller said.&nbsp;The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act of 2025, also called the CLARITY bill, is aimed to make it easier to handle digital assets, add protections for consumers, and provide businesses and regulators with a clear set of rules.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Skinny Master Accounts</h2>Waller said that the central bank is planning to roll out its ‘skinny master accounts’ proposal before the end of the year. ‘Skinny’ accounts are a proposal from the Federal Reserve that would be focused on payments and without the full functionality of a traditional bank master account.Waller touted it as capable of spurring innovation in the payments space, while balancing Fed’s risk exposure as these accounts would not receive interest on balances or provide overdraft protection.&nbsp;“I would like to try to have this done by the end of the year if possible,” Waller said at the event.“They (skinny accounts) have all kinds of services that go with and they make payments through the Fed rails. You have access to fed wire, ACH payments, you get intraday credit if your account goes negative to Fed most of the money during the day,” Waller said.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin Prices</h2>On the selloff, Waller said that the crypto sector is detached from the traditional finance world and can therefore see ‘big crashes’.&nbsp;“I think there was a lot of sell off, just because firms that got into it from mainstream finance had to adjust their risk positions,” he said.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin price</a> at the time of writing fell nearly 1% to $70,331.49. CLARITY Bill On Crypto Seems To Be ‘Stalled’ In The Congress, Crypto Hype Fading, Fed’s Waller Says

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Bessent was responding to Senator Brad Sherman’s question on whether he had the authority to direct U.S. banks or taxpayer funds to buy bitcoin or Trump coins.</li><li>He said the government will retain seized bitcoin.</li><li>Last month, Standard Chartered estimated that dollar-backed stablecoins could draw nearly $500 billion in deposits from U.S. banks by the end of 2028.</li></ul>The United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that he lacks the authority to use U.S. tax dollars to purchase bitcoin.Bessent had appeared before the House Financial Services Committee to discuss the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s annual report.“I am Secretary of the Treasury, I do not have the authority to do that, and as Chair of FSOC, I do not have that authority,” Bessent said in response to Senator Brad Sherman’s question about whether he could direct U.S. banks or taxpayer funds to purchase bitcoin or Trump coins.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Government Will Retain Seized Bitcoin</h2>Bessent added that the government will retain seized bitcoin, citing the seizure of $1 billion in bitcoin linked to the criminal marketplace Silk Road in 2020. “$500 million of bitcoin was retained, and that $500 million has become over $15 billion,” Bessent added.Bitcoin has been under heavy selling pressure for a while. The cryptocurrency was down nearly 3% to $73,503 on Wednesday, having declined more than 26% over the past year and around 16% so far in 2026.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Banks Vs Stablecoins</h2>The Trump administration has pushed for a broader adoption of dollar-pegged tokens, having signed a law establishing a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins last year. Last month, Standard Chartered estimated that dollar-backed stablecoins could draw nearly $500 billion in deposits from U.S. banks by the end of 2028.Earlier this week, a White House meeting aimed at resolving a months-long standoff between major U.S. banks and cryptocurrency firms ended in a deadlock, highlighting deep industry divisions over digital-asset legislation.While the session was described as constructive, key disputes, particularly over whether stablecoins should offer interest or rewards, remained unresolved.
