The firm also noted two months ago that Walmart is emerging as a leader in applying artificial intelligence within the retail sector.Oppenheimer analysts said that strength in Walmart’s non-core businesses could prompt the retailer to raise its 2026 outlook, likely by increasing only the lower end of its EPS range.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Consensus View</h2>Analysts expect Walmart’s third-quarter revenue to increase 4.3% to $175.17 billion, according to Koyfin. At that level, it would be the fifth time in the last six quarters that year-over-year topline growth is below 5%. The Q4 growth projection is 4.5%.Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) are expected to increase by 3.7% to $0.60.Adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin is expected to be 4.07%, the lowest in the last four quarters, but above the 3.99% in Q3 last year.&nbsp;The results would follow a critical leadership announcement: Walmart announced last week that John Furner, the CEO of Walmart’s U.S. business, will succeed longtime CEO Doug McMillon in February.<h2 class="st-heading-2">WMT Share Trend</h2>Walmart’s shares hit an all-time high after it announced a partnership with OpenAI that lets users shop Walmart products directly from ChatGPT. They have since declined by about 8%.In a tumultuous year, particularly for retailers, the WMT stock has emerged resilient. WMT is up 11.4% year-to-date, compared to the 13% gains in the benchmark S&amp;P 500. And I hear that McDonald’s is playing a very big role in getting prices down for this country.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">‘Affordability’ Emerges As The Key Theme&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>The Trump administration is beginning to face heat for surging food prices in the country, which many see as a consequence of his tariff policy, even though officials have downplayed the linkage.&nbsp;Democrats recently notched a series of wins in state and local races in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, contests where voter anxiety over affordability, including soaring food costs, was a key issue.&nbsp;With “affordability” becoming a central theme, Trump appears to have reversed course lately. On Friday, he slashed duties on more than 200 imported food items, including coffee and bananas, and had earlier touted 50-year mortgages as a way to help ease monthly housing costs.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Where Are We On Inflation?</h2>On Monday, Trump pressed that his government was making progress in containing food inflation, without offering specifics.&nbsp;“Affordable should be our word, not theirs,” he said. “Democrats get up and they talk about ‘affordability,’ ‘affordable.’ They don’t say that they had the worst inflation in history, the highest energy prices in history, everything was the worst.”However, the most recent inflation reading from September showed that consumer prices rose 3% year over year, the highest jump since January. In recent third-quarter earnings reports, executives from top consumer packaged food companies and restaurants flagged rising costs and a pullback from low- and middle-income group consumers.McDonald's, which has been offering Extra Value Meals starting at $5 for a year now, has admitted that low-income consumers are having to absorb "some significant inflation."&nbsp;The "Big Mac" index, a popular gauge of food prices by comparing the cost of McDonald’s double-decker hamburger across countries, showed that its average cost was $6.01 in July, up from $5.69 a year ago and $5.15 three years ago, according to Reuters.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MCD">MCD stock</a> closed 0.7% lower on Monday. However, there are 22 items versus 29 last year, including a higher percentage of Walmart’s in-house brands. &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Sam's Club</h2>The warehouse-store chain’s Member’s Mark Thanksgiving Meal is priced at $100 for 10 people, the same as last year. This year’s meal, in fact, has nine items, up from eight last year, with new side options like green beans with cranberries and sliced almonds replacing Brussels sprouts.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Target</h2>Target has rolled out a Thanksgiving meal for four at $20, its lowest price yet. As part of the deal, Good &amp; Gather turkeys will cost the same as last year: $0.79 per pound. However, like Walmart, the company has swapped in in-house-label brands for bread and frozen corn, dropping the Del Monte green beans and Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup from last year's lineup.Separately, Target is offering several everyday grocery items, such as&nbsp;apples,&nbsp;pumpkins, and Chicken Pot pies, for a discounted price of $4.99 as part of the Thanksgiving promotions. &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Amazon&nbsp;</h2>The e-commerce giant has announced a $25 Thanksgiving meal, which includes an eight-pound Butterball turkey, a selection of sides, such as mashed potatoes and green bean casserole, crescent rolls, and holiday pie.The meal is intended for a family of five, resulting in a per-person cost of $5. &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">ALDI</h2>The German grocery chain is offering a 21-item Thanksgiving meal for 10 people at $40. The company claims the price is lower than last year’s package. The selection includes a 14-pound Jennie-O turkey, rolls, cranberry sauce, mac and cheese, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie.&nbsp;Items that are part of the meal are purchased individually and marked on&nbsp;the shelf. The basket includes a Butterball turkey at $.97 per pound, the lowest price since 2019, the company said. That meal is available through Christmas.The company, however, did not make any outright comparisons between current pricing and sticker prices during the Biden administration last year.However, a cursory check from October 2024<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2024/10/17/walmart-sets-the-table-early-with-a-thanksgiving-meal-for-less-than-7-per-person">&nbsp;shows</a> that Walmart's "inflation-free" Thanksgiving meal was priced at less than $7 per person, making the 2025 meal more than 40% cheaper. But according to Walmart, last year's meal comprised 29 items for serving eight people. In contrast, this year's package will accommodate two more stomachs, albeit only with "over 20 national and private brand items."<h2 class="st-heading-2">GOP Takes Major Electoral Beating</h2>Trump's affordability claims come in the aftermath of the&nbsp;Republican Party taking a severe hit in regional elections across the United States on Wednesday. Democrat Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race, while Mikie Sherrill became New Jersey's next governor, and Abigail Spanberger won the race for Virginia governor. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi also won the lieutenant governor's race in Virginia.Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy posted a video of himself on X, calling the losses a wake-up call for the party. "There are two key lessons for Republicans. Listen carefully: Number one, our side needs to focus on affordability, make the American dream affordable. Bring down costs: electric, grocery, healthcare, and housing.
