Bakkt Completes Sale Of Loyalty Unit, Charts Path Toward Pure-Play Crypto Strategy

Bakkt (BKKT) stock jumped 13.8% in extended trading on Monday after the company swung to a net income during the first quarter after cutting its operating expenses.The cryptocurrency trading platform said it reported a net income of $16.2 million for the quarter ended March 31, compared to a year-ago loss of $21.3 million, in the year-ago quarter.Bakkt said its crypto-enabled accounts rose 7.9% to 6.8 million in the first quarter. In comparison, total transacting accounts remained relatively flat year-over-year and declined 20.1% sequentially, tracking broader declines in activity.The firm’s assets under custody jumped 52.5% year-over-year to $1.87 billion, primarily due to higher trading prices for crypto assets.Digital asset prices have remained extremely volatile following a surge after Donald Trump was elected as the U.S. President.Bakkt has undergone a strategic overhaul this year to trim expenses. It agreed to sell its qualified custodian subsidiary, Bakkt Trust Company, and is also exploring strategic alternatives for its loyalty business segment, including a potential sale or wind-down.In March, it placed a bet on stablecoins by signing a cooperative agreement with Distributed Technologies Research (DTR) to combine its crypto trading platform with DTR’s stablecoin payments platform. Bakkt Holdings (BKKT) stock fell about 32% in premarket trading on Tuesday after the company delayed its fourth-quarter earnings report and revealed that two of its partners will not renew their commercial agreements.The cryptocurrency trading platform said it would delay its quarterly earnings call to 8:30 a.m. ET on March 18. Shares of Bakkt Holdings Inc (BKKT) lost over a quarter of their market capitalization on Wednesday after Trump Media and Technology Group Corp (TMTG) <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/b2icontent.irpass.cc/2660/rl142115.pdf">announced</a> a partnership with Charles Schwab (SCHW) in its bid to expand into financial services.In November, the Financial Times <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ft.com/content/d7f921d5-3668-4b6b-a98d-2681ad73610f">reported</a> that Trump Media was in advanced talks to buy Bakkt. Following the report, BKKT shares had soared 162% to cross the $31 mark.Wednesday’s disclosure by Trump Media appears to have dampened investor expectations of Bakkt getting acquired by Trump’s firm.Meanwhile, Nangi Research <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/NingiResearch/status/1884626719358730692">revealed</a> a short position on BKKT.“The thesis is straightforward—no need for a detailed report. With $DJT partnering with Charles Schwab, any potential acquisition of $BKKT is off the table. The recent spike in $BKKT's share price was purely driven by acquisition rumors,” Nangi said on X.On Wednesday, Trump Media announced its board of directors has approved a financial services and financial technology strategy, which will include the launch of the financial services and FinTech brand Truth.Fi.The company said that its board had approved the investment of up to $250 million to be custodied by Charles Schwab to diversify its cash and cash-equivalent reserves of over $700 million as of Dec. 31, 2024.Trump Media anticipates that Truth.Fi products and services, including multiple investment vehicles, will be rolled out in 2025 as new agreements are consummated, funding levels are determined, and necessary regulatory approvals are secured.Shares of the firm traded over 5% higher on Wednesday.On Stocktwits, retail sentiment surrounding BKKT dipped into the ‘extremely bearish’ territory (11/100) from ‘neutral’ a day ago, hitting a year-low level.
