Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. The conflict, now in its third week, has pushed shipping through the Strait of Hormuz close to a standstill, tightening global supply and impacting Asian demand.Brent climbed back above $103 after a brief drop, while WTI hovered near $97. The U.S. signaled it could expand strikes on Iranian oil assets, even as it continues to allow some crude flows through Hormuz. Meanwhile, the UAE and Kuwait have cut output, and Saudi Arabia is ramping up alternative export routes, underscoring the growing strain on supply chains.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Crude Rally Clouds Fed Rate Cut Outlook</h2>Analysts said the oil spike is feeding directly into the macro narrative around interest rates. Research firm StoneX said the surge in oil prices reinforces a “higher for longer” outlook for the Federal Reserve, adding that the longer the Strait of Hormuz stays technically hostile, the greater the chance that oil prices stay higher for longer, Dow Jones noted.He noted that such a scenario could delay rate cuts and keep the U.S. dollar supported as markets reassess the Fed’s policy trajectory.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Phillip Nova said oil holding near $100 per barrel is already feeding into inflation, pointing to U.S. diesel prices crossing $5 per gallon. “The burn from elevated oil prices is being felt,” she said, adding that even emergency reserve releases have failed to ease supply disruptions. The brokerage added that the war-driven risk premium in oil remains intact, with markets now focused on the duration of the conflict and the extent of damage to energy infrastructure.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Recession Warning Gets Louder</h2>Moody’s economist Mark Zandi&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Markzandi/status/2033597296563167659">warned on X</a> that the surge in oil prices could push the economy closer to a downturn. He said recession probability was already near 49% before the conflict and could rise further, noting that “every recession since WWII, save the pandemic recession, has been preceded by a spike in oil prices.”Zandi added that if oil remains elevated for weeks rather than months, “a recession will be difficult to avoid,” as higher energy costs hit consumers quickly.However, not all analysts see sustained upside. Morningstar maintained its $65 per barrel mid-cycle forecast for Brent, assigning a low probability of raising it from the possible destruction of Iran's oil infrastructure. However, the firm acknowledged that prolonged supply bottlenecks could trigger demand destruction and broader economic stress. Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund (USO)</a> rose slightly.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Brent, WTI Rise On Iran Tensions</h2>Oil prices jumped as escalating tensions in the Middle East raised fears of further supply disruptions. Brent crude futures jumped nearly 2% to $105.15 a barrel after settling $2.68 higher on Friday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1.6% to $100.32 a barrel after gaining nearly $3 in the previous session.The rally comes after U.S. strikes late last week on Iran’s key export hub at Kharg Island heightened fears of further supply disruptions heading into Monday’s trading, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that carries about 20% of the world’s oil.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hedge Funds Ramp Up Bullish Oil Bets</h2>Institutional positioning in crude has surged. The Kobeissi Letter&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/KobeissiLetter/status/2033240134116622472">said on X</a> that hedge fund long positions in Brent crude futures jumped 65,438 contracts to 351,032 in the week ending March 10, the highest level since February 2020.The Kobeissi Letter said long positioning has surged 966% since December, the largest increase in at least six years. Bullish bets on WTI crude have also climbed to an eight-month high, based on data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.Commodity trading advisors, or algorithm-driven funds, are now 100% long in both WTI and Brent, the Kobeissi Letter said. “This is the first time this has occurred in U.S. crude oil since September 2021, when the position lasted 26 trading sessions.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Goldman Sachs Flags Drop In Hormuz Oil Flows</h2>Goldman Sachs said oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have plunged as the conflict disrupts tanker traffic. The bank estimates flows have fallen to about 0.5 million barrels per day, down from roughly 19.5 million barrels per day normally moving through the waterway, according to an Investing.com&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://in.investing.com/news/analyst-ratings/goldman-sachs-says-oil-flows-through-strait-of-hormuz-down-sharply-93CH-5290737">report</a>.&nbsp;After accounting for pipeline redirection, Goldman Sachs estimates that about 17.2 million barrels per day of Persian Gulf oil flows are currently disrupted. The bank also outlined several potential paths that could increase flows through the strait, including Iran allowing safe passage for certain shipments, a broader de-escalation of the conflict, or stronger naval protection for tankers.However, Goldman Sachs warned that risks to its base-case assumption of a gradual 30-day recovery beginning March 21 are skewed toward delays.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fuel Spending Surges Amid Oil Rally</h2>Patrick De Haan, petroleum analyst at GasBuddy,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2033291928159097243">said on X</a> that the oil rally is already pushing up fuel costs. “Americans today will spend $300 million more on gasoline than they did 30 days ago.”&nbsp;The national average gasoline price stands at $3.68 per gallon,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2033328046875312338">higher</a> than about 78% of days between January 2021 and January 2025, according to De Haan. GasBuddy data also show&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2033180282556416428">45 of 50 U.S. states</a> have seen diesel prices climb by more than $1 per gallon in the past four weeks.De Haan&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/GasBuddyGuy/status/2033311564820885565">noted</a> that prices were sagging slightly&nbsp;on Sunday due to normal price cycles, which is often why Sundays are a better time to fill up. The disruptions have forced major Gulf producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE to cut output, removing roughly 6% of global oil supply so far.The supply shock has overshadowed governments' efforts to stabilize the market. The International Energy Agency on Wednesday agreed to release 400 million barrels from emergency reserves, the largest coordinated drawdown in its history. The U.S. plans to contribute&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-announces-172m-barrels-of-oil-release-from-strategic-petroleum-reserve-amid-iran-war-crisis/cZdrWAwRIB3">172 million</a> barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, with shipments expected to begin next week.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analysts Warn Stockpile Releases May Fall Short</h2>Despite the unprecedented reserve releases, analysts say the move may not be enough to offset disruptions in global supply.
