US Natural Gas Futures Decline To Over 3-Week Lows – KOLD Gains 13%

Temperatures are projected to remain above normal in the Midwest and Southern U.S. through February 18, according to a Bloomberg report citing the Commodity Weather Group.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Krugman pointed out that the inflation-adjusted price of crude oil had fallen from more than $180 per barrel to nearly $60 per barrel, citing data from the Energy Information Administration.</li><li>Venezuela is currently known to have the largest oil reserves in the world, at nearly 304 billion barrels.</li><li>However, Venezuela’s crude is extremely heavy, resulting in low recovery rates and high production costs, according to Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok.</li></ul>Economist Paul Krugman on Wednesday criticized President Donald Trump’s view that crude oil reserves represent a valuable strategic asset, characterizing the perspective as “decades out of date.”In his latest post, Krugman noted that oil prices remain low by historical standards. Citing data from the Energy Information Administration, he noted that inflation-adjusted crude oil prices have declined from peaks above $180 per barrel in 2008 to roughly $60 per barrel today.“Trump’s belief that he has captured a lucrative prize in Venezuela’s oil fields would be an unrealistic fantasy even if he really were in control of a nation that is, in practice, still controlled by the same thugs who controlled it before Maduro was abducted,” Krugman said.The economist stated that the U.S. raid on Venezuela is not for oil, but rather, for “oil fantasies,” adding that the vast amount of oil reserves that President Trump wants to take from the country do not exist.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Orinoco Belt Problem</h2>Venezuela is currently known to have the largest oil reserves in the world, at nearly 304 billion barrels. Saudi Arabia comes second, with 267 billion barrels of proven reserves, followed by Iran at 209 billion barrels.However, Venezuela’s crude is extremely heavy, resulting in low recovery rates and high production costs, according to Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok.“Venezuela’s self-reported crude oil reserves tripled from around 100 billion barrels in the early 2000s to 300 billion barrels in the late 2000s due to the reclassification of Orinoco Belt heavy oil as ‘proved,’” said Slok in a note on Tuesday.Another problem with extracting crude from Venezuela’s reserves is the country’s aging oil infrastructure. Trump Warns Israel Not to Strike Iran, Oil Prices Reverse Decline Amid Ceasefire Uncertainty 

U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning comes after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that he had ordered retaliatory strikes on Tehran after Iran continued bombing after a ceasefire was declared.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday took to Truth Social to call for an immediate ramp-up in U.S. oil production, urging the Department of Energy to act swiftly and warning that elevated energy prices play into the hands of America’s adversaries.Trump’s posts come amid renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as well as continued market volatility in U.S. crude oil prices.&nbsp;West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Crude Oil futures fell more than 1.7% following the posts and Brent Crude Oil futures dipped 0.3%. Both were&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/crude-oil-prices-climb-after-iran-threatens-us-blames-gambler-trump/chm5TRCRR5s">trading in the green</a> before the bell.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund (USO)</a> was down 0.5% after the opening bell, after surging at least as much as 1% in pre-market trade.&nbsp;Shares of Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Occidental Petroleum Corp. (OXY) also pared their gains. Trump Urges Energy Department To ‘Drill Baby Drill’, Warns High Oil Prices Benefit US Enemies

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he’s “watching” and urged everyone to “keep oil prices down” in a Truth Social post Monday morning.

Crude oil prices rose Monday morning after Iran warned that U.S. attacks on its nuclear facilities have broadened its scope of retaliation and called President Donald Trump a ‘gambler’ for taking up the risk of aligning the U.S. with Israel.U.S. crude futures jumped to $75.19 per barrel overnight, their highest level since January, before paring gains.West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading at $74.55 per barrel early Monday morning, up 0.9%. The&nbsp;United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 1% in pre-market trade.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">USO ETF</a>&nbsp;has gained 21% over the past month. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DBO">Invesco DB Oil Fund</a> (DBO) rose 0.5%, bringing its monthly gain to around 15%.Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and Occidental Petroleum Corp. Oil prices gained over 2% on Monday after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia and other allies (OPEC+) said it would extend its output cut till December.OPEC said in a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.opec.org/opec_web/en/press_room/7409.htm">statement</a> that the eight OPEC+ countries Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman, which previously announced additional voluntary adjustments in April and November 2023, have agreed to extend the Nov. 2023 voluntary production adjustments of 2.2 million barrels per day for one month until the end of Dec. 2024.The group was reportedly set to raise the output by 180,000 barrels per day in Dec. 2024.Other factors, too, have been weighing on oil prices. Although the commodity witnessed a decline in prices last week due to record U.S. output, reports about Iran conducting a retaliatory strike on Israel has provided a decent support.Reuters <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/oil-prices-rise-by-over-1-opec-output-hike-delay-2024-11-04/">cited</a> UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo saying that “considering the ongoing economic growth concerns, we believe the group wants more clarity on the economic impact of the interest rate cuts in the US and the fiscal and monetary policy easing in China.”The report added that the in China, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress will meet from Monday to Friday and is expected to approve further stimulus to boost the slowing economy. However, the bulk of it may go toward reducing local government debt, the report said, citing analysts.On Monday morning, Brent crude futures maturing in Jan. 2025 were trading over 2.5% higher.
