<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin said artificial intelligence agents could use blockchain networks to transact, coordinate, and verify activity autonomously.</li><li>He said crypto wallets like MetaMask were evolving into “personal financial operating systems” that artificial intelligence agents could manage on behalf of users.</li><li>Research from a16z Crypto highlighted that the agents were already moving from theory to practice.</li></ul>Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum&nbsp;(ETH), says that artificial intelligence (AI) is likely to be the next big thing that changes the course of cryptocurrency.&nbsp;Lubin&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/04/18/ethereum-co-founder-joseph-lubin-warns-of-the-dangers-of-ai-being-controlled-by-a-few-big-tech-firms">told</a> CoinDesk on Saturday that autonomous and semi-autonomous AI agents might soon use crypto infrastructure as the backbone for machine-driven activities on decentralized networks to transact, coordinate, and verify each other.&nbsp;Lubin said that he is "sympathetic to the idea that blockchain is for machine intelligence," but doesn't think AI will take over for humans.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI Could Become Crypto’s Core Infrastructure</h2>Lubin warned that the growing influence of AI also carries risks, particularly if control becomes concentrated among a small number of large technology firms.He said decentralized systems and cryptographic tools will be critical to maintaining accountability, enabling AI agents to verify one another’s actions in open, trustless environments.&nbsp;As part of this shift, Lubin said crypto wallets like MetaMask were being redesigned as “a new kind of neobank” that users own and control, functioning more like a personal financial operating system.He also pointed to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, predicting the rise of “corporate chains,” blockchains operated by businesses for scalability and management, while still relying on Ethereum’s base layer for asset issuance.“The best way to ensure that an asset is durable… is to mint it on Ethereum layer one,” he said.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/ethereum">Ethereum’s price</a> was trading at $2,361, down by over 3% over the past 24 hours. Before the surge, funding rates were deeply negative of 0.004%, indicating that a majority of traders were positioned short, the on-chain analyst reported. On Stocktwits, the retail sentiment around ETH remained in the ‘bullish’ zone, while chatter around it stayed in the ‘high’ levels over the past day.The price action followed&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/strait-of-hormuz-closed-again-by-iran/cZJ6sfMRIUM">reports</a> of progress in US-Iran negotiations and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels. At Davos, BlackRock (BLK) CEO Larry Fink framed blockchain-based finance as a way to cut costs and improve efficiency. And new BlackRock research shows Ethereum already underpins more than 65% of tokenized assets globally.Speaking at the World Economic Forum on Friday, CEO Fink framed tokenization as the next leg up for global financial markets. Fink believes that if there were a way for all investments to be tokenized on a platform, we could “move from a tokenized money market fund to equities and bonds and back and forth.”&nbsp;<blockquote>“I think the movement towards tokenization and decimalization is necessary. It's ironic that we see two emerging countries leading the world in decimals, in the tokenization and digitization of their currency. That's Brazil and India. I think we need to move very rapidly to doing that. We would be reducing fees.” Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock</blockquote> Link further added,&nbsp;“So I would argue that, yes, we have more dependencies on maybe one blockchain, which we could all talk about. But that being said, those activities are probably processed and more secure than ever.” Fink’s assertion comes as BlackRock published research that indicates that the Ethereum blockchain already underpins 65% of tokenized assets.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/ethereum">Ethereum (ETH)</a> was trading at $2,957.88, up 1.1% in the last 24 hours. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around Ethereum remained in ‘bearish’ territory, as chatter levels remained at ‘normal’ over the past day.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Is Wall Street’s Tokenization Bet Converging On Ethereum?</h2>The <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.blackrock.com/us/financial-professionals/literature/presentation/2026-thematic-outlook-stamped.pdf">study titled</a> “Could Ethereum Represent the 'Toll Road’ to Tokenization?” BlackRock noted that the Ethereum blockchain could benefit structurally from tokenization.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/image_5_png_65da6eed78.webp" alt="image (5).png" width="1916" height="1078"><figcaption>BlackRock's new 2026 outlook for Ethereum.</figcaption></figure>BlackRock's analysis of real-world asset (RWA) data as of January 5, 2026, shows that while more than 65% of tokenized assets around the world are issued on Ethereum, the rest are made up of competing networks like Stellar (XLM), Polygon (MATIC), Solana (SOL), Avalanche, Arbitrum, and the XRP Ledger. None of these networks, however, comes close to Ethereum.BlackRock's framing doesn't just focus on issuing tokens; it also sees Ethereum as financial infrastructure, like a payments rail or settlement layer, where value grows not just from adoption but also from being embedded across issuance, trading, settling, and keeping records.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tokenization In Practice</h2>The study also links Ethereum's position to the rise of stablecoins, which BlackRock calls "tokenization in action." Stablecoins are digital versions of real-world currencies that run on blockchain networks. They are often used as proof that tokenized assets can work at scale beyond just speculative crypto trading.BlackRock's data shows that stablecoin transactions are growing faster than spot crypto trades.
