During the 2018–2019 cycle, that metric fell to 63.8% before the crypto winter set in. “The current picture is different,” he wrote.&nbsp;According to him, the market is experiencing severe internal compression in profitability, but it is still far from a true structural reset. “As long as the long-term average holds near 87.5%, this is better described as a prolonged cyclical correction with elevated two-way volatility, rather than a full bearish-phase reset,” Adler wrote.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Short Covering Supports Bitcoin Price, Not Fresh Demand</h2>JDK Analysis also suggested that Bitcoin may be showing a false show of strength. It noted that spot markets are seeing active selling, while futures data showed aggressive buying largely driven by short covering rather than new long positions, which has helped keep prices supported near current levels.&nbsp;In a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/The_JDK99/status/2039250945788325909?s=20">post</a> on X, JDK said that as short positions unwind, the temporary bid supporting prices could fade, leaving the market exposed to continued selling pressure. Roughly $17 billion worth of digital asset options, including approximately $14.5 billion in Bitcoin, expired on crypto derivatives exchange Deribit. Options are contracts that give traders the right to buy or sell Bitcoin at a set price on a specific date. When contracts of this size expire, traders adjust or close their positions, which can push prices sharply in either direction.Despite the expiry, Bitcoin's open interest on Deribit rose 2.38%,indicating that new positions were opened to replace those that expired.The expiry compounded an already pressured market. Approximately $300 million in long positions, bets that Bitcoin's price would rise, were liquidated over 24 hours, compared to only $50 million on the other side, according to market data. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Bitcoin mining difficulty fell 7.76% to 133.79 trillion on Sunday, as miners shut down operations amid rising electricity costs and falling profits.</li><li>Higher energy prices and reduced block rewards have pushed many miners into losses.</li><li>If Bitcoin remained near or below miners’ cost of production, more operators may sell Bitcoin to cover expenses.</li></ul>Bitcoin (BTC) mining difficulty fell by 7.7% on Sunday, marking one of the sharpest declines this year as rising energy costs forced weaker miners offline.According to the Bitcoin Difficulty Chart&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coinwarz.com/mining/bitcoin/difficulty-chart">data</a> by CoinWarz, the drop to $133.79 trillion was due to fewer people using the network as electricity prices went up.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Energy Cost Rises</h2>Energy costs have risen in recent weeks, with crude oil near $100 per barrel<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/iran-strait-of-hormuz-crude-oil-rally-pushes-bets/cZ31C61RIiK"> amidst Middle East</a> tensions. Nationally, electricity prices have also increased by&nbsp;7% due to the rise of AI data centers and pressure on electric grids, Fox News&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/americans-hit-soaring-electricity-bills-price-hikes-outpace-inflation-nationwide">reported</a> last month.&nbsp;Electricity prices rose from 12.82 cents per kilowatt-hour to 13.72 cents, which can make it more expensive for mining companies to operate.&nbsp; When fewer miners participate, Bitcoin's protocol automatically lowers the difficulty, which helps maintain the timing of block production. As of writing,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin</a> was trading down by 2.7% over 24 hours.
