WK Kellogg Co. (KLG) has become the first major food maker to sign a legally binding agreement to eliminate artificial food dyes from its cereals, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Wednesday.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/KLG">WK Kellogg’s stock</a> edged 0.15% higher in afternoon trade with retail sentiment on Stocktwits in ‘bearish’ territory over the past day.&nbsp;The Attorney General’s office said the deal was reached after months of investigation and requires Kellogg’s to remove the dyes by the end of 2027 under an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance. It noted that while rival brands have made verbal pledges, Kellogg’s is the first to sign a legally binding agreement.&nbsp;“Following months of investigating and negotiating, I’m proud to officially say Kellogg’s will stop putting these unhealthy ingredients in its cereals,” said Attorney General Paxton. “I encourage other food manufacturers to sign similar agreements to demonstrate their commitment to helping Americans live healthier lives.”The announcement follows a Civil Investigative Demand (CID) issued to Kellogg’s in February and a formal probe launched in April. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office said the inquiry began after Kellogg’s failed to follow through on a pledge to remove petroleum-based food colorings in the U.S., despite eliminating them in Canada and Europe. The company continued using various blue, red, and yellow dyes in American cereals.In June, General Mills (GIS) also publicly&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/general-mills-agrees-remove-toxic-artificial-dyes-its-products-following-investigation-and-legal">vowed</a> to remove artificial dyes from cereals and foods supplied to U.S. schools by summer 2026, and from all U.S. retail products by the end of 2027, following a CID and investigation. Kellogg’s Agrees to Eliminate Artificial Dyes From Cereals By 2027 In Legally Binding Agreement

In a statement, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called on other food manufacturers to follow Kellogg’s lead and sign similar agreements.

Mars Inc., maker of M&amp;M’s and Skittles, is reportedly looking to gene-editing technology to secure the supply of cocoa plants.The company has entered a licensing agreement with Pairwise, an agricultural gene editing firm, according to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-06/m-m-s-maker-turns-to-gene-editing-in-bid-to-secure-cocoa-supply">report</a> by Bloomberg, to speed up the development of hardier cocoa crops.The agreement would give Mars access to Pairwise’s CRISPR tools, which&nbsp;would&nbsp;allow scientists to modify the DNA sequences of cocoa plants, the report said.&nbsp;This includes enzymes and trait libraries.“The ultimate goal is to help address the pressures cacao faces globally from climate variability, plant diseases and environmental stresses,” Pairwise told Bloomberg. Gene editing “has the potential to improve crops in ways that support and strengthen global supply chains,” according to Mars’s plant sciences director, Carl Jones.The race to secure cocoa production has ensued for candymakers like Mars, Hershey’s (HSY) and Mondelez (MDLZ) after it was reported that the cocoa yield from the Ivory Coast and Ghana – two of the world’s largest producers of cocoa reponsible for 60% of the crop’s global supply – has been falling over the past few years due to the impact of climate change.Farmers increasingly relying on fertilizers and pesticides has also impacted productivity, along with the onset of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV), which has&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://apps.fas.usda.gov/newgainapi/api/Report/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Cote+d%27Ivoire+-+Cocoa+Sector+Overview+-+2025_Accra_Cote+d%27Ivoire_IV2025-0001.pdf">spread</a> to nearly all cocoa-producing regions.&nbsp;The traditional breeding process method to produce more resilient cocoa plants can take decades and would involve the mixing of tens of thousands of genes. According to Pairwise Chief Executive Officer Tom Adams, this results in “really low chances of getting exactly what you want.”In contrast, CRISPR lets researchers narrow down the process to include only specifically desired traits. Researchers would still get the same result as from breeding, “but you’re stacking the odds to get what you want,” he said.This is not Mars’ first foray towards securing its cocoa supply with the help of gene-editing.
