Being the first successful online cryptography currency, Bitcoin has inspired other alternative currencies such as Litecoin, Peercoin, Primecoin, and so on.  The cryptocurrency then took off with the innovation of the turing-complete smart contract by Ethereum which led to the development of other amazing projects such as EOS, Tron, and even crypto-collectibles such as CryptoKitties.

A White House official reportedly said on Friday that countries with existing trade agreements with the U.S. would be exempt from the recently announced pharmaceutical tariffs.&nbsp;According to a Reuters report&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.tradingview.com/news/reuters.com,2025:newsml_S0N3U402V:0-latest-drug-tariffs-don-t-apply-to-nations-with-trade-deals-white-house-says/">cited</a> by TradingView, when asked whether pharmaceutical tariffs would apply to trading partners such as the European Union and Japan, which already have trade deals, the official stated that the Trump administration would honor the 15% cap as part of those pacts. Other nations with U.S. trade deals include Vietnam, the U.K., Indonesia, and the Philippines. Major partners like India, Canada, and Mexico have yet to finalize&nbsp;an agreement.The clarification comes after President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a 100% tariff on imported, branded, and patented pharmaceutical drugs starting October 1. In his Truth Social&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/115267512131958759">post</a> announcing the tariffs, Trump only highlighted that an exception would be made for any company that is “IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America.” He explained that “is building” refers to “‘breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction’.”In a note to investors on Friday morning, Jefferies analyst Akash Tewari described the new pharmaceutical tariffs as "a win for Pharma" and "a light at the end of the Trump tunnel," noting that several large-cap companies have already announced U.S. manufacturing projects. Tewari suggested the tariffs and the MFN pilot program may serve as a symbolic “on paper” win ahead of midterms, with limited material impact on pharmaceutical companies.The 100% tariff is higher than what Trump had indicated in August.&nbsp; He&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-plans-gradual-tariff-hike-on-imported-pharma-to-250-over-18-months-to-boost-us-production/chr1KgrRd2x">stated</a> that tariffs would be increased over time, allowing companies sufficient time to build factories and relocate production. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that President Donald Trump is set to send out letters to 17 pharmaceutical company CEOs in the U.S., including Eli Lilly (LLY), giving them 60 days to address the global pricing disparity of drugs.“Other nations have been free-loading on U.S. innovation for far too long, and it is time they pay their fair share,” said Leavitt, reading out one of the letters, addressed to Eli Lilly CEO David A. Ricks.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/LLY">Eli Lilly’s stock</a> dipped more than 1% in afternoon trade after the news broke. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the pharmaceutical giant remained in ‘bullish’ territory over the past day.Other pharma stocks also took a hit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration may reportedly fast-track new drugs from pharmaceutical companies that “equalize” the cost of their medicines between the US and other countries.FDA Commissioner Marty Makary floated the idea in an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-11/fda-offers-to-trade-faster-drug-reviews-for-lower-us-prices">interview</a> on Bloomberg Television. Makary said that price adjustments may give companies another way to obtain “national priority vouchers” under the program announced last month.As part of the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/fda-aims-to-reduce-drug-application-review-time-with-new-voucher-program/chlp5PzRRce">program</a>, the FDA Commissioner will issue vouchers that drug developers may redeem to participate in a program that will shorten the review time from approximately 10-12 months to one or two months after the company submits its final drug application.According to the initial plan, the agency will distribute a limited number of vouchers to companies aligned with the U.S.’ national priorities in the first year, the FDA stated, without naming any specific companies.“We can issue a national priority review voucher for companies that are promising to equalize the price” between the US and what other foreign countries pay, Makary said.“We want to incentivize good behavior in the marketplace, and these priority vouchers are worth a lot of money,” he added while noting that the program could be used as a means to even out drug prices with those currently charged in places like Europe.Trump <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/merck-pfizer-eli-lilly-stocks-rebound-as-trump-targets-drug-costs-with-new-executive-order/chiN18ERbmL">signed</a> an executive order in May intended to match U.S. drug prices with those of other developed countries in order to lower domestic healthcare costs.“The United States has less than five percent of the world’s population and yet funds around three-quarters of global pharmaceutical profits,” Trump said.“Americans will no longer be forced to pay almost three times more for the exact same medicines, often made in the exact same factories. As the largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals, Americans should get the best deal.”Makary, on Friday, did not detail how drugmakers have to adjust prices to qualify for a voucher, Bloomberg said.
