He has asked for up to 100% EU tariffs on imports from India as well as China, in a move aimed at turning up the heat on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.The two nations heavily purchase Russian oil, something Trump has criticized, saying that it indirectly funds the Ukraine war.Last month, the U.S. announced a 50% tariff rate on Indian exports, in part because of the country's trade with Russia. Tech giant Apple, Inc. (APPL) is making considerable inroads in India, a country where it has expanded its manufacturing presence as well, as the U.S.-China standoff continues to be a headwind.&nbsp;A Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-05/apple-s-india-sales-hit-record-9-billion-after-big-retail-push">report,</a> citing people familiar with the matter, stated that Apple’s sales in India reached $9 billion in the fiscal year that ended in March 2025. This marked a $1 billion (12.5%) increase from the previous fiscal year. In Apple’s fiscal year, which ended in September 2024, its overall revenue increased 2%, with iPhone sales a tad better at 3%.Cupertino’s flagship product, the iPhone, drove the bulk of the sales in India, with MacBook laptops also witnessing a demand surge.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AAPL">Apple stock</a> is among the worst-performing mega-cap stocks this year, having pulled back about 4% year-to-date (YTD). After the U.S. President Donald Trump slapped hefty tariffs on exports from China, Apple has shifted most of its U.S.-bound iPhone assembly to India.&nbsp;Acknowledging the untapped market opportunity in India, which was previously overlooked due to the country's price-sensitive consumer base, Apple has opened two additional retail outlets in the country this week.&nbsp;The new outlets are located in Hebbal, Bangalore, and Koregaon Park in Pune, in addition to the existing ones in Delhi and Mumbai, which opened in 2023.Cook posted about the new stories on his X account. “Say hello to Apple Hebbal in Bengaluru and Apple Koregaon Park in Pune! Investing.com -- President Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 25% tariff plus penalties on India starting August 1, citing the country’s purchases of Russian military equipment and energy.

India could&nbsp;face a tariff higher than the rate agreed upon for some of its Asian peers, even as negotiations between Washington and New Delhi progress toward the final stage.Speaking aboard Air Force One while returning&nbsp;from a five-day visit&nbsp;to Scotland, President Donald Trump hinted at a 20%-25% rate that could apply to India, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-29/trump-says-india-may-pay-20-to-25-tariff-but-not-yet-final">reported.</a> He, however, clarified that the final rates have not been determined.“India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country,” Trump told reporters. “You just can’t do that.”The stock market&nbsp;has shown little excitement over the trade deals the Trump administration has clinched with major trading partners, such as Japan and the European Union (EU).On Tuesday, the S&amp;P 500 Index, a measure of broader market performance, closed shy of its record high.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a>, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the S&amp;P 500 Index, has risen 9% year-to-date, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/INDA">iShares MSCI India ETF (INDA)</a> is up a more modest 1.6%.The SPY was among the top five active tickers on Stocktwits late Tuesday, ahead of the big tech earnings and the Federal Reserve’s rate-setting meeting.
