(APPL) is making considerable inroads in India, a country where it has expanded its manufacturing presence as well, as the U.S.-China standoff continues to be a headwind.&nbsp;A Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-05/apple-s-india-sales-hit-record-9-billion-after-big-retail-push">report,</a> citing people familiar with the matter, stated that Apple’s sales in India reached $9 billion in the fiscal year that ended in March 2025. This marked a $1 billion (12.5%) increase from the previous fiscal year. In Apple’s fiscal year, which ended in September 2024, its overall revenue increased 2%, with iPhone sales a tad better at 3%.Cupertino’s flagship product, the iPhone, drove the bulk of the sales in India, with MacBook laptops also witnessing a demand surge.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AAPL">Apple stock</a> is among the worst-performing mega-cap stocks this year, having pulled back about 4% year-to-date (YTD). After the U.S. President Donald Trump slapped hefty tariffs on exports from China, Apple has shifted most of its U.S.-bound iPhone assembly to India.&nbsp;Acknowledging the untapped market opportunity in India, which was previously overlooked due to the country's price-sensitive consumer base, Apple has opened two additional retail outlets in the country this week.&nbsp;The new outlets are located in Hebbal, Bangalore, and Koregaon Park in Pune, in addition to the existing ones in Delhi and Mumbai, which opened in 2023.Cook posted about the new stories on his X account. “Say hello to Apple Hebbal in Bengaluru and Apple Koregaon Park in Pune! That compares to the $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus, the most affordable plan earlier.The move echoes a similar strategy by streaming giant Netflix, which introduced a cheaper plan for mobile-only use, initially in India before expanding to other markets.Announcing the launch on the social media platform X, Vice President and head of the ChatGPT app Nick Turley <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/nickaturley/status/1957613818902892985">said</a> ChatGPT Go offers users 10 times higher message limits, image generation, and file uploads, and twice the memory compared to the free version."Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! Investing.com -- President Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 25% tariff plus penalties on India starting August 1, citing the country’s purchases of Russian military equipment and energy.

India could&nbsp;face a tariff higher than the rate agreed upon for some of its Asian peers, even as negotiations between Washington and New Delhi progress toward the final stage.Speaking aboard Air Force One while returning&nbsp;from a five-day visit&nbsp;to Scotland, President Donald Trump hinted at a 20%-25% rate that could apply to India, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-29/trump-says-india-may-pay-20-to-25-tariff-but-not-yet-final">reported.</a> He, however, clarified that the final rates have not been determined.“India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country,” Trump told reporters. “You just can’t do that.”The stock market&nbsp;has shown little excitement over the trade deals the Trump administration has clinched with major trading partners, such as Japan and the European Union (EU).On Tuesday, the S&amp;P 500 Index, a measure of broader market performance, closed shy of its record high.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a>, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the S&amp;P 500 Index, has risen 9% year-to-date, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/INDA">iShares MSCI India ETF (INDA)</a> is up a more modest 1.6%.The SPY was among the top five active tickers on Stocktwits late Tuesday, ahead of the big tech earnings and the Federal Reserve’s rate-setting meeting. Apple, Inc.’s (AAPL) efforts to diversify its production away from China amid the U.S.-China trade standoff are progressing well, going by data released by a market research firm.Data from Canalys, now part of Omdia, showed that “Made-in-India” smartphone shipments to the U.S. increased by 240% year-over-year (YoY) in the second quarter. India-made smartphones accounted for 44% of the smartphones shipped to the U.S. during the second quarter.This marked a sharp rise from the 13% share India held in the second quarter of 2024.India’s gain translated to a loss for China, as “Made-in-China” smartphone shipments to the U.S. accounted for 25% of the total, down notably from 61% in the year-ago quarter.Vietnam’s share of smartphone shipments to the U.S. was 30%, up from 24% a year ago.Even as overall second-quarter global smartphone sales fell 11% YoY to 13.3 million, moderating from the 25% growth in the first quarter, U.S. shipments edged up 1%, benefiting from the pull-forward effect from Trump tariff threats.“India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple’s accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys.“Apple has scaled up its production capacity in India over the last several years as a part of its ‘China Plus One’ strategy and has opted to dedicate most of its export capacity in India to supply the US market so far in 2025.”Despite&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AAPL">Apple stock</a> languishing amid concerns over stagnant iPhone sales, the tech giant took the pole position in second-quarter smartphone sales. Canalys data showed Apple shipping 13.3 million iPhones in the second quarter, giving it a 49% share of the market. The negotiations were “progressing extremely well” toward achieving the $500 bilateral trade target by 2030 — a goal previously set by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.&nbsp;He touted the “excellent relations” he shared with his U.S. counterpart, Howard Lutnick. “The United States and India share a very special relationship, and I’m very confident we’ll do a robust and good deal where both countries benefit and where businesses on both sides are happy,” he added.He also said the quest to clinch a U.S. deal is part of India’s deliberate policy to partner with “developed nations who complement the India story” as opposed to its previous stance of forging partnerships with countries seen as direct competitors.According to the Indian Commerce Ministry, there are still wrinkles that need to be ironed out, including protecting the domestic farmers from foreign competition. “The Trump administration, and my counterparts, are equally cognizant and sensitive about our concerns,” he added.Delving into the trade talks, Keshav Murugesh, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry UK Business Forum, told CNBC that “India will not be a pushover.” He said both sides are sufficiently motivated, adding that President Trump “and his people want a good deal with India because, let’s face it, India is the future.”India on Thursday successfully finalized a free trade agreement with the U.K., which provides for the lowering of levies on whisky and car imports from the European nation.
