For the umpteenth time on Thursday, he&nbsp;touted its virtues on X, the social-media platform he owns. This time around, he called the Cybertruck an<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1996484482514428311">&nbsp;"incredible vehicle"</a> and the "best-ever from Tesla."Has the vehicle done well to earn the rave reviews? Its contribution to Tesla's sales volume has been so insignificant that Tesla has chosen not to break it down, even two years after its commercial rollout. The company continues to club it under "Other Models," which together accounted for 3.3% of the third-quarter deliveries reported in October.&nbsp;Before assessing the Cybertruck's impact, or lack thereof, on Tesla and its stock, it's worth revisiting how the vehicle came to be.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hype That Fizzled</h2>The earliest memory many Cybertruck fans share is of chief designer Franz von Holzhausen hurling a metal ball at its "armor glass" in 2019 to prove its toughness — only for the window to crack in a now-infamous viral moment.The Cybertruck saw the light of day only four years after Musk announced it. The first production versions rolled out from Giga Texas and were handed out to customers on Nov. 30, 2023. Ford's F-150 Lightning pickup truck, GMC Hummer, Chevrolet Silverado, Lordstown's Endurance, and Rivian's R1T were&nbsp;already on sale by then.&nbsp;Endurance's production has since stopped amid the startup's manufacturing woes, which led to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2023. Although the stock staged a comeback in late 2024 and rallied strongly through year-end, it pulled back again amid the market-wide tariff sell-off. It has since then recovered. Neither the post-Cybertruck launch stock weakness nor the recovery seen in spurts since can be traced back to the vehicle. Fund manager and Tesla investor Gary&nbsp;Black said in a 2023 CNBC interview, "People going to see it, they'll be like, wow!" he said, adding that people will go to the website and order a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or even a Cybertruck.He was probably misled by the staggering 2 million preorders it has managed to collect before its launch. Celebrity endorsements and their purchases did very little to boost demand for the vehicle, as the electric vehicle market has been in a downward spiral since its launch. The company stated that these factors impacted profitability, along with higher operating expenses related to artificial intelligence (AI) and other research and development (R&amp;D) projects.On the earnings call, CFO Vaibhav Taneja flagged potential adverse&nbsp;effects for the energy business from President Donald Trump’s “one big, beautiful” bill (through expiration of energy credit) and tariffs.In a statement, Tesla said, “Q2 2025 was a seminal point in Tesla’s history: the beginning of our transition from leading the electric vehicle and renewable energy industries to also becoming a leader in AI, robotics, and related services.”The company stated that it had produced its first builds of the more affordable version in June, with volume production expected in the second half of 2025. The Tesla Semi and&nbsp;Cybercab (a two-passenger, fully autonomous EV designed for the robotaxi service) are slated for volume production in 2026.Offering an update on the robotaxi launch, CEO Elon Musk stated on the earnings call that the company would “greatly increase” the Austin service area&nbsp;beyond what&nbsp;the competition is doing in a couple of weeks, according to a Transcript made available&nbsp;by Koyfin.He also flagged the likelihood of securing regulatory permission to launch in the Bay Area, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, and&nbsp;several other locations.Comparing robotaxi service with Alphabet, Inc.’s (GOOGL) Waymo, Musk said, “Tesla is actually much better than Google by far and … anyone at real-world AI.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, meanwhile, said on the company’s earnings call that Waymo “launched in Atlanta, more than doubled its Austin service territory, and expanded its Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area territories by approximately 50%.”Pichai also said the company is testing across more than 10 cities this year, including New York and Philadelphia.Retail chatter around Tesla earnings was bordering on bearishness. (TSLA) shares edged up in Wednesday’s early premarket session ahead of the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s earnings report due after the market close.Stung by a demand slowdown amid macroeconomic uncertainties, and CEO Elon Musk’s political overtures and concerns over his divided attention to his flagship business,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">Tesla stock</a> is down nearly 18% for the year. This contrasts with the S&amp;P 500’s 8% advance over the same period.The stock, which is part of the Magnificent Seven group of mega-cap companies, is the&nbsp;worst-performing among them. The<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MAGS"> Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS)</a>, an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the performance of these seven stocks, has gained 5.46% year-to-date.According to Fiscal.ai-compiled consensus, Tesla is expected to report adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.41 and revenue of $22.13 billion for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2025&nbsp;versus the year-ago quarter’s $0.40 and $25.5 billion, respectively. Investing.com -- China’s dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) sector is widening as policy headwinds and cooling demand continue to weigh in on the market in the U.S. and Europe, according to Barclays, citing BloombergNEF’s (BNEF) latest EV Outlook.

Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) stock experienced one of its biggest drawdowns, which shaved nearly $154 billion from the Elon Musk-led electric vehicle (EV) company’s market capitalization.Musk, the world’s richest person, saw his net worth drop by roughly $34 billion, as a large portion of his wealth is linked to his electric vehicle company.Musk-Trump Lock HornsThe development came after Musk and President Donald Trump exchanged tirades on social media, days after the former exited from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — a quasi-governmental agency set up by the latter immediately after he was sworn in as president.The DOGE was established to&nbsp;identify and eliminate wasteful government expenditures, aiming to reduce the ballooning U.S. fiscal deficit.&nbsp;While leaving the DOGE in a public ceremony in the White House, the two professed longlasting camaraderie.Things took a turn for the worse&nbsp;within a week. The feud started when Musk raised objections to Trump's “one, big, beautiful bill,’ calling it a “disgusting abomination.” On Thursday, Musk intensified his attack by posting on X, a social-media platform he owns, that the president wouldn’t have won a second term without his support.&nbsp;Trump did not take kindly to the comment. Calling Musk “crazy,” the president threatened&nbsp;to cancel the federal contracts of the companies owned by him. Apart from his flagship EV venture, Musk also runs SpaceX, Neuralink brain implant company, Boring Company, X, and the xAI artificial intelligence (AI) startup.He also&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114632205177163456">said</a> Musk’s belligerent attitude was due to his administration cancelling his EV mandate. Trump’s tax bill&nbsp;includes a provision to cancel the Biden administration's EV tax credit.Musk went one up and said he would decommission all key Dragon spacecraft that are&nbsp;crucial&nbsp;for the International Space Station. In a separate post, he also said Trump’s name is in the infamous “Epstein files,” adding that it was the reason why they haven’t been made public.In the interim, Musk ran a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1930685402631053403">poll&nbsp;</a>asking his over 220 million followers whether it was time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle. At the time of writing, over 80% had replied in the affirmative.Amid heated social media exchanges that intensified on Thursday afternoon, Tesla plummeted to a low of $273.21 before closing down 14.26% at $284.70.Analyst WorriedCommenting on the stock drop, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said it was due to investor fears that “this Musk/Trump battle will stop their friendship and change the regulatory environment for Tesla on the autonomous front over the coming years under the Trump Administration.”“The quickly deteriorating friendship and now "major beef" between Musk and Trump is jaw dropping and a shock to the market and putting major fear for Tesla investors on what is ahead,” he added.Ives, however, expressed hopes of the situation starting to settle down, adding that it wasn’t good for either side.The analyst said, “This feud does not change our bullish view of Tesla and the autonomous view, but clearly does put a fly in the ointment of the Trump regulatory framework going forward.”“ It's another Twilight Zone moment in this Musk/Trump relationship which now is quickly moving downhill.”Retail DownbeatOn Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">Tesla stock</a> stayed at ‘extremely bearish’ levels (5/100) by late Thursday, with the degree of intensifying sharply from a day ago. Elon Musk's brain implant company Neuralink announced Monday a $650 million capital raise in a new funding round, while his artificial intelligence (AI) venture xAI has reportedly opted for a debt offering.The development came shortly after the Tesla CEO&nbsp;confirmed his exit from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which took up&nbsp;much of the billionaire’s time.&nbsp;Investors, including Sequoia Capital, Thrive Capital, Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment&nbsp;Management participated in Neuralink’s Series E funding round.Neuralink said that since its Series D financing in August 2023, its brain implant has been used by five individuals with severe paralysis, and global clinical trials have been launched for neurosurgical care spanning three countries and two continents.The Series D financing raised $280 million from investors such as Founders Fund.&nbsp;The Musk-backed company has also launched a trial, dubbed CONVOY, to test out new use cases beyond digital device control. Additionally, it has invested heavily in expanding the number of neurons and brain regions that our device interfaces with to unlock new dimensions of human potential.Neuralink’s brain-computer interface (BCI) product, the N1 implant, is designed to record neural activity through 1,024 electrodes distributed across 64 flexible leads, or “threads.” Each of these threads are thinner than a human hair and can be placed independently in the brain.The company said the five individuals with severe paralysis who use Neuralink&nbsp;can now control digital and physical devices with their thoughts, marking a profound step toward helping restore independence.BCI research is gaining momentum, with Neuralink’s rival and startup, Paradromics, testing its device, Connexus, in its first human patients in May.&nbsp;Last month, Synchron, a New York-based medical equipment manufacturer, announced&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/apple-steps-into-elon-musk-neuralink-territory-with-brian-control-tech/chiqLaIRbZy">teaming up</a> with Apple (APPL), allowing the latter to add a new protocol to support "Switch Control" for BCI in its hardware devices.Separately, a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter said Musk-owned xAI has roped in Morgan Stanley to raise $5 billion in debt.
