Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>MFN pricing extended nationwide through Medicaid and to future new medicines.</li><li>Steep direct-to-patient discounts rolled out via TrumpRx, including $35 insulin.</li><li>Additional pharma companies, including Johnson &amp; Johnson, are expected to ink similar deals next week.</li></ul><p>U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday announced nine new agreements with pharmaceutical companies to lower prescription drug prices for Americans to the lowest levels paid in other developed nations, under what the administration calls a “most-favored-nation” (MFN) pricing framework.</p><p>With these additions, 14 of the 17 pharmaceutical companies targeted by the administration in August have now signed on.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Big Pharma Roster Expands</strong></h2><p>The companies named in Friday’s agreements are Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, Genentech, Gilead Sciences, GSK, Merck, Novartis and Sanofi.</p><p>Trump said additional companies, including Johnson &amp; Johnson, are expected to announce similar agreements next week, as the administration continues to expand the program.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Medicaid Savings And Future Drug Pricing</strong></h2><p>The White House said the agreements apply to drugs used to treat an array of expensive, long-term conditions including type two diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hepatitis B and C, HIV and certain cancers.</p><p>The administration said every state Medicaid program in the U.S. will benefit from MFN prices on products from the nine companies, which it estimates will save billions of dollars. The agreements also require MFN pricing for all new innovative medicines these companies bring to market.</p><p>Trump also floated the idea of calling a meeting with insurance companies to discuss further ways to lower healthcare costs, suggesting insurers could significantly reduce prices or face alternative approaches that would direct savings to consumers.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Deep Discounts Via TrumpRx</strong></h2><p>The administration said the companies are required to offer medicines at steep discounts off list prices when selling directly to American patients through TrumpRx, a government-backed direct-to-patient drug purchasing platform.</p><p>The administration said patients would see steep price cuts, citing examples such as Amgen’s Repatha at $239 versus&nbsp;list price of $573, Bristol Myers Squibb’s Reyataz at $217 versus $1,449, and Sanofi’s Plavix at $16 versus $756, alongside similar reductions for drugs from Gilead, GSK, Merck and Novartis. The administration also said Sanofi will list its insulin products on TrumpRx at $35&nbsp;for every&nbsp;month’s supply.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Drugmakers Pledge Domestic Investment</strong></h2><p>Trump said the participating companies have committed to invest at least $150 billion collectively in U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing in the near term.</p><p>The administration also said several companies will donate active pharmaceutical ingredients to the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve to strengthen emergency preparedness. The letters also called for companies to make medicines available through a Trump-branded direct-to-consumer platform and commit to not charging Americans more than foreign markets under a “most-favored-nation” pricing framework.</p><p>In exchange, companies were offered multiyear relief from threatened tariffs and some potential regulatory measures. The administration has said it is using trade policy as leverage to force price reductions, arguing that Americans pay more than triple what patients in other developed nations pay for the same drugs.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Who Has And Hasn’t Cut Deals</strong></h2><p>Pfizer and AstraZeneca have already struck agreements with the administration in recent months, but many other drugmakers are still on the sidelines. Companies such as AbbVie, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences, Amgen, Johnson &amp; Johnson, Merck, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Sanofi have yet to announce any deals.</p><p>Novartis said in a statement to Bloomberg it is in talks with the administration and is committed to lowering U.S. drug costs while addressing price gaps with other developed countries. Meanwhile, Roche’s Genentech unit said it supports efforts to reduce U.S. prices while urging other nations to better reward biopharmaceutical innovation.</p><p>The White House cautioned that no deal is final. “Until officially announced by President Trump or the Administration, any reporting about potential dealmaking is speculation,” spokesman Kush Desai told the news outlet.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2"><strong>Manufacturing Commitments&nbsp;</strong></h2><p>Domestic manufacturing has played a central role in negotiations. Novartis has stepped up its U.S. footprint, with CEO Vas Narasimhan recently attending the opening of a new manufacturing facility in North Carolina alongside FDA Commissioner Marty Makary.</p><p>The company plans to invest $23 billion in the U.S. over the next five years and generate about 41% of its revenue from the market, led by drugs such as Entresto.
