Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Ethereum is currently the subject of intense debate among market participants as the asset tests critical support levels amid shifting institutional interest and broader geopolitical tensions. The community remains highly polarized, with active discussions focused on the launch of new staking ETFs, concerns over institutional accumulation, and divergent technical outlooks regarding potential breakout or retest scenarios.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Monad has raised approximately 244 million dollars in total funding across multiple rounds. The company secured 19 million dollars in a seed round in February 2023 led by Dragonfly Capital, followed by a 225 million dollar Series A round in April 2024 led by Paradigm at a 3 billion dollar valuation. The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter results on Tuesday before the markets open.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Three CEOs In Four Years</h2>Bender was appointed the interim CEO in May after Kohl’s fired its then-CEO, Ashley Buchanan, for financial impropriety. Buchanan was found to have pushed for deals with a vendor with whom he had a personal relationship; he was in the CEO role for less than 100 days.Kohl’s has cycled through three CEOs in the past four years, underscoring the company’s need for a leader who can provide long-term stability and direction. Adjusted loss per share is expected to be $0.17, compared to a $0.20 per share adjusted profit in the year-ago quarter.Kohl's results will likely show a sequential acceleration in sales trends, though it is expected to offer a cautious outlook, analysts at UBS said in an investor note earlier this month. Citi had opened an "upside 90-day catalyst watch" on the shares last month.Kohl’s earnings come amid mixed results from major retailers: Walmart, thanks to its pole position, showed continued momentum, while Target’s sales shrank, prompting the company to cut its full-year profit forecast. Kohl’s (KSS) shares jumped 13.5% at Thursday’s open following the release of first-quarter results that showed a significantly smaller loss than analysts had anticipated, and reaffirmed its full-year guidance.The department store chain reported a diluted loss per share of $0.13, narrower than the expected loss of $0.22, as per Koyfin data.&nbsp;Its revenue decreased 4.1% year-over-year (YoY) to $3.05 billion, missing Wall Street’s estimate of $3.06 billion by a whisker. Comparable sales were down 3.9% as compared to the previous year.&nbsp;“Our first quarter performance was ahead of our expectations, and the actions we are taking are starting to make progress with early signs of a positive impact,” said interim CEO Michael Bender, marking his quarterly earnings debut.Bender took over after Kohl’s fired former CEO Ashley Buchanan earlier this month, just four months into his tenure, for trying to steer business to his romantic partner, Chandra Holt. The company&nbsp;stated that Buchanan did not disclose the relationship as required by its ethics policy and deemed his actions&nbsp;to be cause for dismissal.During the first quarter (Q1), gross margin as a percentage of net sales rose by 37 basis points to 39.9%. Selling, general, and administrative (SG&amp;A) expenses declined 5.2% year-over-year to $1.2 billion, representing 36.0% of total revenue, a decrease of 32 basis points.Operating income increased to $60 million from $43 million in the prior year, equivalent to 1.9% of total revenue.&nbsp;The company reported a net loss of $15 million,&nbsp;an improvement from the $27 million net loss in the previous year. Inventory rose 2% YoY to $3.1 billion. Kohl’s Stock Jumps On Q1 Earnings Beat, Reaffirmed Guidance

 For the full year 2025, the company continues to expect net sales to decline between 5% and 7%, with comparable sales decreasing between 4% and 6%. 

Xerox Corp. (XRX), which sells print and digital document products, and services globally, reported Tuesday ahead of the market open mixed quarterly results but retail remains optimistic.The Norwalk, Connecticut-based company reported fiscal 2024 fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.36, down from last year’s $0.43 and missing the consensus estimate of $0.53, as seen on Koyfin.Revenue fell 8.6% year-over-year (YoY) to $1.61 billion versus the $1.58 billion consensus estimate. Print and other revenue fell 8.7% to $1.54 billion and Xerox Financial Services (XFS) revenue declined 11% to $89 million.Xerox’s bottom line and topline trailed expectations in the past four quarters.Fourth-quarter adjusted operating margin climbed 100 basis points (bps) to 6.4%, and operating cash flow fell $182 million YoY to $467million.CEO Steve Bandrowczak said, “2024 was a critical year as we implemented a new operating model and structural process improvements to position Xerox for long-term, sustainable growth.’’Looking ahead, the company expects low-single-digit revenue growth in constant currency for fiscal year 2025 and free cash flow of $350 million to $400 million.
