Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Washington Just Handed Steelmakers a Huge Win: ETFs to Gain

Trump's move easing EPA rules boosts the steel supply chain, setting ETFs like XME up for firmer pricing power and steadier volumes.   

United States Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing Peter Navarro said Thursday that Washington will maintain tariffs on steel and aluminum with no exemptions for the European Union.“There will be no exemptions, no exclusions for steel and aluminum tariffs,” Navarro told reporters. He noted that the U.S. added more than 400 new products to the tariff list this week to curb manipulation and circumvention. “Every time we try to give an exemption or exclusion to one of our allies, they abuse it totally. We learned that it was a slippery slope,” Navarro said, recalling Trump’s previous term in office.Navarro also praised the administration’s 15% tariff on cars, describing it as a cornerstone of Trump’s trade strategy with Europe. “Anybody who criticizes Trump’s policy has to look at the president’s magnificent achievement in dealing with the EU,” he said.His comments come after the U.S. and EU&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-eu-announce-tariffs-autos-pharma/chsSuh2Rdid">issued</a> a joint statement earlier on Thursday, formalizing the trade deal announced back in July. It is, after all, one of the largest entities in the world. It’s important not just economically but strategically, yet for many, many years it has been taking unfair advantage of the U.S.—consistently higher tariffs, consistently higher non-tariff barriers,” Navarro added.U.S. markets were trending lower ahead of Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole on Friday. Oil rebounded on strong demand signals and easing trade tensions, boosting XOP and SLX while pressuring XRT, CRAK, JETS, and GDX.

The U.K. is racing to finalize a trade agreement with President Donald Trump to avoid higher U.S. steel tariffs ahead of the July 9 deadline.“We are working with the U.S. to get this over the line as soon as possible,” U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson, Tom Wells, told reporters on Monday, as&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-07/uk-races-to-get-us-to-cut-steel-tariffs-ahead-of-key-deadline">cited</a> by Bloomberg. “The best thing we can do for industry is to get this deal implemented.”&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SLX">VanEck Steel ETF (SLX)</a> was down more than 1.3% in morning trade. The ETF has gained nearly 20% this year and 4% over the past 12 months. Despite the downswing, retail sentiment on Stocktwits around SLX improved to ‘bullish’ territory from ‘neutral’ a week ago.&nbsp;At stake is the U.K.’s exemption from a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum exports to the U.S. The country is currently subject to a 25% duty, but that could double unless the trade deal between the two countries, known as the U.S.-U.K. Economic Prosperity Deal (EPD), signed in May, is fully implemented before next week’s deadline.Steel exports to the U.S. are a key part of the U.K. economy, with the American market being its second-largest customer. Trump has warned that if the U.K. is found to be non-compliant with the EPD, tariffs “on or after July 9” may be raised.In February, Trump instated 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. In June, those were doubled for most countries – but the U.K. received a temporary reprieve due to the EPD. Unless a final agreement is reached, that exemption may be lifted.In the U.S., steelmakers have generally backed the tariffs, arguing they help shield American jobs and protect the industry from underpriced imports. The American Iron and Steel Institute said the duties help guard against market disruptions caused by global oversupply.U.S. equity markets opened in the red on Monday even after the Trump administration hinted that the July 9 tariff deadline could be extended to August 1. UK Rushes To Finalize US Steel Deal Before Trump’s July 9 Tariff Deadline

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson, Tom Wells, told reporters that the country is working with the Trump administration to avoid higher tariffs on steel “as soon as possible.”

Shares of U.S. Steel ceased trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday following the completion of its takeover by Japan-based Nippon Steel, marking the end of the storied American manufacturer’s independent run.This newly formed alliance establishes a global steelmaking force, promising over $11 billion in investments across U.S. Steel facilities by 2028.&nbsp;The strategic plan is designed to protect and expand more than 100,000 jobs in states such as Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Alabama, Indiana, and Arkansas.U.S. Steel will continue to operate under its historic name and maintain its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.&nbsp;As part of the finalized agreement, the companies have also signed a National Security Agreement (NSA) with the U.S. government, which secures specific operational and structural guarantees to safeguard national interests.Under the NSA, the company’s executive leadership and board will remain predominantly American.
