Gold mining stocks came under pressure on Wednesday as spot gold fell 1.5% to $4,095.16 per ounce following a stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation report. The data increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates this month, strengthening concerns that tighter monetary policy would weigh on bullion prices.
Major producers Barrick Mining and Newmont declined, while South African miners Harmony Gold, Gold Fields and Sibanye Stillwater also recorded losses. Canadian companies faced similar pressure, with Agnico Eagle Mines falling 2.2% and Kinross Gold dropping 1.6%.
Higher interest rates generally create headwinds for gold because the metal does not generate interest income, making it less attractive relative to yield-bearing assets such as Treasury securities. A stronger U.S. dollar, if accompanied by rising yields, could add further pressure.
