Coal India has reportedly signed a non-binding MoU with the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corp to jointly explore &amp; develop critical minerals and other minerals of mutual interest.  
 
The MoU aligns with the push for resource security, as India eyes increasing demand for minerals needed in batteries, electric vehicles, renewables, etc.  
 
This is part of a broader diversification effort: Coal India has also inked or is exploring MOUs / joint ventures in mineral / non-coal segments (e.g., with Hindustan Copper)  
 
On the flip side, its core coal business is under pressure: recent quarterly results showed a ~20% YoY drop in net profit due to weakening demand and lower coal offtake.  
 
So, the MoU gives a narrative boost: Coal India 2.0 — beyond coal. But the market will test whether this narrative has teeth.
