Over the past few weeks, one vocal critic has published a series of daily rants questioning WeRide’s management and strategy.

Investors should challenge management. That’s healthy. However, many of these conclusions overlook how an autonomous driving business is valued. Rather than debating opinions, I’d rather look at the facts.

One criticism is that Tony Han called WeRide “30x to 40x undervalued” compared to Waymo, yet didn’t personally buy more shares.

First of all, I think those are 2 different discussions.

When Tony compared WeRide to Waymo, he wasn’t saying the stock should immediately trade at 40x today’s valuation. He was sharing his view of the long-term opportunity, based on Robotaxi scale, ADAS, international expansion and WeRide’s technology. Investors are free to disagree. That’s what makes a market.

The insider buying argument is also weak.

Tony Han already has most of his wealth tied to WeRide. On top of that, both Tony Han and CFO Jennifer Li voluntarily locked up their shares for three years after the IPO. They chose to extend their alignment with shareholders, not reduce it.

WeRide also repurchased around 40 million shares through its buyback programme. You can debate whether that was the best use of capital, but it’s difficult to argue management wasn’t acting on its conviction.

Ultimately, none of us knows what WeRide is worth today. The market has one opinion. Management has another. I did my due diligence,  and I will be picking up more stock on the cheap. 

Time, and execution, will decide who’s right.

It speaks to today’s market sentiment, not necessarily intrinsic value. Markets have been wrong before, just as management can be wrong. That’s why investing exists.

History suggests the market can misprice companies for long periods, especially in emerging industries.  Amazon, Tesla and Nvidia have be good examples of that.
