As mentioned yesterday, countries are now deploying strategic oil reserves. This can bring short-term relief and temporarily calm oil markets. However, it does not solve the structural problem.
The situation again shows how important it is for Europe to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. As long as Europe depends on geopolitically unstable regions for oil, our economies remain vulnerable to conflicts and supply disruptions.
Electrification should also be part of that strategy: electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and reducing oil use in transport. These steps can strengthen Europe’s energy security, yet policy often seems contradictory and sometimes even discourages this transition

The biggest geopolitical risk currently lies with Iran. From their perspective, the regime has little left to lose, and retaliation remains a real possibility. This means tensions may not disappear quickly.
Even if direct military pressure temporarily declines, asymmetric threats such as drone attacks could continue. The presence of the U.S. fleet may stabilize the situation in the short term, but naval operations are expensive and cannot continue indefinitely.
If threats in the region persist, surrounding countries remain under pressure. This turns the issue from a regional conflict into a broader risk for global trade, energy supply and economic stability.

What is often overlooked in this discussion is that these tensions ultimately threaten the prosperity of NATO countries as well. When energy supply, trade routes and regional stability come under pressure, the impact is felt far beyond the region.
The real question is how long the world will accept this situation. Israel and possibly the United States may soon say that their direct objectives have been achieved. But that does not remove the underlying problem.
In fact, the risk exists that the real escalation could begin afterward. If threats continue, pressure may grow for stronger military intervention.
For that reason, it is possible that we are only at the beginning of a longer period of geopolitical tension with economic consequences.
