Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) Maps and Ads services have escaped being designated as gatekeepers under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act.
The European Commission on Thursday stated that Apple Maps and Ads do not constitute an important gateway for business users to reach end users.
“This assessment is based on a number of considerations, including that Apple Maps has a relatively low overall usage rate in the EU, and that Apple Ads has very limited scale in the online advertising sector in the EU,” the Commission said.
Apple shares were down 0.1% in Thursday’s pre-market trade. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the company trended in the ‘bullish’ territory at the time of writing.
Apple welcomed the European Commission’s decision, according to a Reuters report citing a statement from the company.
“These services face significant competition in Europe, and we're pleased the Commission recognized they do not meet the criteria for designation under the Digital Markets Act,” Apple stated.
The gatekeeper designation under the European Union’s DMA refers to the ability of intermediary platforms to act as the primary “bottleneck” for many market participants.
The European Commission designated Apple as a gatekeeper in 2023, alongside Alphabet Inc., ByteDance, Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., and Microsoft Corp.
So far, Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and App Store have been designated as gatekeepers under the EU’s DMA.
AAPL stock is up 2% year-to-date and 19% over the past 12 months.
