DoorDash (DASH) shares surged on Thursday after the company announced an agreement to acquire Instacart (CART) in a deal valued at approximately $17 billion, and also reported its third-quarter results that beat analyst estimates.
“Grocery is one of the hardest things to get right online,” DoorDash CEO Tony Xu stated. “Together, we could give stores of every size more of those tools and unlock the potential of grocery delivery.”
DASH shares traded 6% higher, while CART shares traded marginally higher at the time of writing.

DoorDash will acquire Instacart for $65 per share, a 26% premium to Instacart’s October 22 closing price. At least 75% of the consideration will be paid in cash, with DoorDash stock not to exceed 25% of the total consideration. Instacart’s board unanimously approved the deal.
The company expects the acquisition to generate at least $500 million in annual synergies, net of investments, over multiple years. The company expects to invest more than 100% of total synergies in the first year after closing, with positive net synergies from the second year onward.
The transaction is expected to close in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, subject to Instacart shareholder approval and regulatory clearances, including in Canada and Israel. DoorDash expects to fund the cash portion through cash on hand and debt financing. The deal is not subject to a financing condition.
