  • The pause affects specialists training Grok in fields such as finance, law, STEM, and creative domains.

Elon Musk’s xAI has reportedly put a temporary hold on hiring specialists who help train its Grok chatbot. The affected roles, known internally as AI tutors, were part of a broader effort to improve Grok’s expertise across a variety of subjects.

Over the past several months, xAI was actively recruiting professionals with backgrounds in finance, science, accounting, and even comedy, to help refine the chatbot's responses and expand its capabilities, reported Bloomberg.

While the hiring pause is not expected to be permanent, sources told the publication that it reflects growing strain inside the company's recruiting operation. They said xAI’s human resources department has been overwhelmed by the volume of applicants and has struggled to process new candidates efficiently.

The slowdown comes despite the company’s recent push to build a more specialized workforce around Grok.

After previously relying on a broader group of trainers, xAI shifted its focus toward recruiting subject-matter experts to help improve the chatbot’s performance in specific fields.

Layoffs, Departures Add To Turbulence

The hiring freeze follows a series of workforce changes within xAI’s human data organization. Bloomberg reported that the company cut a number of AI tutor positions last fall, with many of those affected working as generalists. Additional layoffs followed in early March and extended beyond the training organization.

The team has also seen leadership turnover. Jack Schwaiger, who oversaw medicine, legal, and STEM-related training efforts, left the company in April. Jeffrey Weichsel, who led finance-focused training initiatives, also departed after more than a year at xAI, reported Bloomberg.

Focus Turns To Operations And Growth

The developments come as xAI works through a broader reorganization following its merger with Musk’s SpaceX (SPCX) earlier this year. As part of that effort, the company has been trying to strengthen Grok's capabilities in areas that could appeal to financial institutions.

Sources told Bloomberg xAI has recruited bankers and private credit professionals in an effort to make the chatbot more useful for finance-related applications.
