The Government of India utilises the Jeevan Pramaan system to facilitate the creation of a Digital Life Certificate (DLC) through the UMANG app, making it convenient for retirees.

Pensioners can use this digital tool to confirm their "aliveness" without having to visit their pension-disbursing organisation in person. Pensioners must present their life certificate in November of each year in order to continue receiving their pension.

In addition to helping pension disbursing agencies (PDAs) avoid fraud or incorrect payments, a life certificate acts as proof of existence for retirees. The certificate may be submitted online using the government's Jeevan Pramaan website or in person at a bank, post office, or Common Service Centre (CSC). Pensioners over 80 can submit their life certificate between October 1 and November 30, 2025, to continue collecting their pension.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to generate your life certificate using the UMANG app:

1. Download and Open UMANG

Pensioners should first download and install the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. On launching the app, look for “Jeevan Pramaan” in the list of services.

2. Start the Life Certificate Process

In the Jeevan Pramaan section, tap "Generate Life Certificate." You will be taken to a form where you must provide personal information, like:

Aadhaar number
-PPO (Pension Payment Order) number
-Details of a bank account
-Registered mobile number
-Biometric Verification

The UMANG app will ask for biometric verification once the necessary fields have been completed. An STQC-certified fingerprint or iris scanner that links to your PC or Android device is required.

3. Generate the Certificate

The system creates the Digital Life Certificate after successful Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. An SMS confirmation with a unique Pramaan ID will be sent to you immediately.

4. Certificate Storage and Sharing

The Jeevan Pramaan system maintains the Life Certificate Repository, where the DLC is safely stored. There is no need to provide a hard copy because it is automatically shared with your bank or other pension-disbursing institution.

5. View or Download Certificate

Your certificate remains available for viewing or downloading. Open Jeevan Pramaan and view Life Certificate in the UMANG app.

You can get the certificate as a PDF after entering your Pramaan ID or Aadhaar number and verifying using an OTP.

Key Pre-requisites and Tips

Your pension data must be connected to your Aadhaar number.
Authentication requires a biometric device that has been registered and validated by STQC.
Check with your pension-sanctioning authority to find out how long the DLC is valid after it is generated.

Although the process is made considerably easier by the UMANG-based digital life certificate, there are growing fraud concerns. Pensioners have received warnings from cybercrime squads about fraudsters pretending to be officials and asking for OTPs or personal information under the pretence of upgrading life certificates.

Pensioners should use only authorised platforms, such as the UMANG app, for submissions and to never share OTPs or critical information over phone conversations or text messages.
