Linda Yaccarino announced Wednesday she is stepping down as chief executive of X, ending a two-year tenure defined by efforts to stabilize the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
“After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X,” Yaccarino wrote in a post on the platform. She praised Musk for entrusting her with the “responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.”
Yaccarino did not name a successor or detail the timing of her departure.
X, formerly known as Twitter, appointed Yaccarino CEO in 2023 after Musk’s acquisition of the company. She joined from NBCUniversal, where she led global advertising and partnerships and was credited with transforming its ad business.
Yaccarino said she was proud of the “historic business turnaround” achieved during her leadership, noting progress in restoring advertiser confidence and implementing safety priorities.
She also highlighted the platform’s new features, including Community Notes and the upcoming financial product ‘X Money,’ while adding that X continues to evolve as the company integrates more closely with Musk’s AI startup, xAI.
Her announcement comes at a time when xAI’s Grok chatbot has come under increased scrutiny for controversial responses. Poland on Wednesday said it would be filing a complaint against the chatbot with the European Union (EU) after it made offensive comments about Polish politicians.
Grok has also reportedly faced intense backlash for producing hate speech and even praising Adolf Hitler. The Anti-Defamation League and other organizations have criticised the posts as “dangerous” and “extremist.”
Musk’s chatbot has been banned nationwide in Turkey after it posted vulgar and insulting comments about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other notable figures.
