OpenAI, UK Government Strike Strategic Deal On AI Safety And Infrastructure

OpenAI and the U.K. government announced on Monday that they have teamed up for a new strategic partnership setting out plans to expand AI security collaborations and explore investing in AI infrastructure like data centers. 

The partnership involves OpenAI sharing more technical information with the U.K. AI Security Institute to enhance the government's understanding of AI capabilities and security risks, as well as supporting the government’s mission to utilize AI to transform taxpayer-funded services.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around OpenAI moved higher but remained within ‘neutral’ territory amid ‘high’ levels of chatter. 

“AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country – whether that’s in fixing the NHS, breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth,” said Technology Secretary Peter Kyle. The strategic partnership with OpenAI also aims to explore where AI can be helpful in areas such as justice, defence and security, and education technology.

London was OpenAI’s first international location. The U.K. government said that OpenAI will also increase the size of its London office following the new deal. 

“AI is a core technology for nation-building that will transform economies and deliver growth,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two entities states that the partnership intends to build on the U.K.’s strengths in science innovation and talent to “maintain a world-leading UK AI ecosystem rooted in democratic values.”

As part of the agreement, OpenAI will explore ways to help deliver the infrastructure priorities outlined in the U.K.’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, with a focus on enhancing sovereign AI capabilities to maximize economic benefits.

The partnership follows the U.K.'s commitment of up to £500 million ($674 million) toward developing domestic AI capacity, which includes collaborations such as the one with OpenAI.
