Perplexity AI Inc. has reportedly offered news publishers a share in the revenue it generates from AI searches, amid concerns from outlets that features like these are eating into their web traffic and thereby, income.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Perplexity has set aside $42.5 million to share with publishers as part of this program.
“AI is helping to create a better internet, but publishers still need to get paid. So we think this is actually the right solution, and we're happy to make adjustments along the way,” said Perplexity’s co-founder and CEO, Aravind Srinivas, according to the report.
According to the terms of Perplexity’s new AI search revenue sharing program, publishers will be able to earn money when their content appears in search queries in the startup’s Comet web browser, when Comet’s AI assistant uses this content to complete tasks, or when publishers receive traffic through the browser, the report said.
The firm said it will pay for this program through the revenue it generates from Comet Plus, which is a new subscription option in the Comet web browser. Users will have to pay $5 a month to get a curated set of content from publishers who are a part of Perplexity’s new AI search revenue-sharing program, which is similar to Apple Inc.’s News+ service, according to Srinivas.
However, while Apple shares with publishers only 50% of the revenue it generates through Apple News+, Perplexity will share 80%, according to the report.
Perplexity is not a publicly listed entity currently. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the company was in the ‘bearish’ territory at the time of writing.
