Shares of Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (RKLB) jumped 5% in overnight trading heading into Friday after the space company secured a $90 million U.S. Space Force contract to build geostationary defense satellites, adding a fresh catalyst ahead of its latest Electron launch mission for Japanese earth-imaging company Synspective.

RKLB stock slid nearly 7% on Thursday, but is on-track to record its third straight week of gains, up about 1% so far this week.

RKLB Lands $90M Space Force Contract

Rocket Lab on Thursday said it was awarded a $90 million contract by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command to design, manufacture, integrate, and operate two geostationary satellites carrying the Heimdall space domain awareness payload.

The contract marks Rocket Lab’s first operational satellite production program for geostationary orbit and expands the company’s role in U.S. national security space programs. Rocket Lab will serve as the prime contractor and manage the mission end-to-end, including spacecraft manufacturing, payload integration, launch integration using a government-furnished launch vehicle, and on-orbit operations for up to five years after commissioning.

The satellites will be built using Rocket Lab’s Lightning spacecraft bus, adapted for the thermal, propulsion, radiation, and station-keeping demands of geostationary orbit. The company said Lightning is already in production across several national security programs, including the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 2 Transport Layer-Beta and Tranche 3 Tracking Layer missions.

RKLB Advances GEO Tracking Capabilities

The new award is based mainly on the Heimdall payload program, which originally began under Geost before Rocket Lab acquired the firm in 2025 and integrated it into Rocket Lab Optical Systems.

The earlier prototype phase focused on developing compact electro-optical sensors to operate in geosynchronous orbit and improve the Space Force’s ability to monitor objects in the GEO belt. Rocket Lab said the latest contract moves the effort from payload prototyping into operational spacecraft deployment. Spacecraft assembly, integration, and testing will be conducted at Rocket Lab’s Long Beach, California spacecraft production complex, while mission operations will be handled from Rocket Lab facilities after launch.

Electron Launch Day Caps Busy Week For RKLB

The defense contract announcement came hours before Rocket Lab’s next Electron launch from New Zealand. The mission, named “Viva La StriX,” is scheduled to lift off at 9:30 p.m. NZT, and will carry another radar imaging satellite for Synspective into low Earth orbit.

Rocket Lab said the launch marks its ninth Electron mission for Synspective’s StriX constellation, a radar satellite network that can capture Earth images even through clouds and at night, helpful for disaster response, mapping, and monitoring infrastructure.

Over the weekend, Rocket Lab also said its upcoming Loxsat mission later this year will test the tech developed by Eta Space for storing and handling cryogenic rocket fuel in low Earth orbit, which is important for future deep-space missions and orbital refueling. Rocket Lab said it will provide both the Electron launch vehicle and spacecraft platform for the mission in partnership with NASA and Eta Space.

RKLB Expands Space Tech Portfolio

Rocket Lab’s latest Space Force win comes shortly after the company unveiled plans for a potential $3 billion stock offering, which will be used for acquisitions, and future growth. The company has recently accelerated acquisitions to close the supply-chain gaps and bring more spacecraft tech in-house.

Recent acquisitions include California-based Motiv Space Systems earlier this month, which added spacecraft robotics and motion-control tech used in missions such as NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover program, as well as German laser communications company Mynaric in April through a $155.3 million deal to boost Rocket Lab’s satellite communications and defense-related capabilities.

SpaceX IPO Fuels Investor Interest In RKLB

Rocket Lab has also benefited from renewed investor excitement around SpaceX’s blockbuster IPO plans, which have reignited interest across the broader space sector.

SpaceX on Wednesday published its long-awaited IPO prospectus and is reportedly seeking to raise as much as $75 billion at a valuation that could hit $2 trillion, potentially making it the largest IPO in history. The filing highlighted SpaceX’s ambitions spanning launch systems, Starlink satellite internet services, AI infrastructure, and orbital computing capabilities.

Rocket Lab’s defense contracts, spacecraft manufacturing business, and development of its Neutron rocket program have positioned the company as one of the most closely watched challengers to SpaceX in commercial launch and national security space services.

One user said, “that lil offering is gonna get completely gobbled up with more contracts locked in and acquisitions. Bears were braindead to bet against it.”

Another user said, “This is huge. Not a small launch deal — national security level trust from the Pentagon. Rocket Lab keeps evolving from “just a rocket company” into a full-scale space defense prime.”

RKLB stock has rocketed nearly 400% over the past year.
