Interestingly, Altman has teased, albeit in a lighter vein, a social media play in the past.

OpenAI is reportedly working on a social media network on the lines of X, formerly known as Twitter, The Verge reported on Tuesday, which would push the artificial intelligence giant into new territory.

It was not immediately clear whether OpenAI is developing the social media piece as a standalone app or as additional functionality in its mainstay AI chatbot.

Sources told The Verge that the company has an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT's image generation with a social feed.

According to the report, CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project.

Launching a social media network would pit OpenAI directly against Meta and X.

Both those social media giants have released popular AI offerings. Meta has plugged its Llama models into WhatsApp and Instagram to respond to user queries through chat and reportedly plans to roll out a standalone AI app. X, owned by Elon Musk, has Grok answer user queries on X posts.

Grok and Meta AI are widely believed to have advanced quickly and gained strong capabilities thanks to training on massive amounts of user-generated content from their respective social platforms.

Interestingly, Altman has teased, albeit in a lighter vein, a social media play in the past.

In February, after Musk made an unsolicited offer to purchase OpenAI for $97.4 billion, Altman responded, "no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."

When reports of Meta building a rival to the ChatGPT app first surfaced, Altman shot back at X again by saying, "ok, fine, maybe we'll do a social app."

OpenAI is making splashes through new product functionality, mostly recently through its 4o Image Generation and a Perplexity-like search tool, and is fresh off a $40-billion funding commitment from Softbank.
