Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp (TM) said on Wednesday that it has allocated more than $50 million in the construction of new amenities at its Arizona Proving grounds.

The company is looking to add new amenities for vehicle and automotive technology testing and development at the site, including a 5.5-mile oval track, an off-road park, and new ride and handling surfaces, among other improvements.

Most of the new construction is expected to be completed by later this year, the company said, while adding that it is planning a future facility for development of advanced driver assistance technology as well.

Stefan Young, Vice President at Toyota Motor North America’s Research and Development, said that the site updates will make it more attractive for companies, including Toyota, to test new vehicle capabilities. The facility has been available to the industry as a vehicle testing resource since 2021.

The facility, though owned by Toyota, is managed by Intertek Transportation Technologies. Ever since the facility was opened to outside companies, it has hosted 37 different organizations with about 286 test vehicles that have conducted about 203,400 hours of testing, Toyota said.

The facility is located in the Sonoran Desert near Wittmann, Arizona, a town about 60 miles northwest of Phoenix. It covers approximately 11,650 acres and has 77 miles of testing surfaces with 60 miles of paved roads, more than 50 miles of off-road and dirt tracks and a high-speed oval track with a second oval track nearing completion.

Toyota established the Arizona Proving Grounds in 1993. Since then, the automaker has tested more than 50 Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the North American market there.

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around Toyota was trending in ‘bullish’ territory over the past 24 hours, accompanied by ‘high’ message volume.

Toyota’s stock is down by 12% this year and by about 17% over the past 12 months.
