President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he will speak with allies in Europe shortly ahead of a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.

In posts on Truth Social, President Trump praised European leaders and said they want to see a deal done with Russia with respect to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The President also took aim at his critics and called the media “unfair” for quoting people like his former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, who said Russian President Putin has “already won,” according to a report by The Atlantic. “If I got Moscow and Leningrad free, as part of the deal with Russia, the Fake News would say that I made a bad deal!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump’s announcement about speaking to European leaders comes after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the U.S. President had pledged to consult them before meeting Putin. Tusk remained cautious about the outcome of the meeting, though. “I will wait... for the effects of the meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin–I have many fears and a lot of hope,” he said.

European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas asserted that any deal between the U.S. and Russia on the conflict must include Ukraine and the EU. “The U.S. has the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously. Any deal between the U.S. and Russia must have Ukraine and the EU included, for it is a matter of Ukraine’s and the whole of Europe’s security,” said Kallas.

Meanwhile, U.S. equities rose in Wednesday’s pre-market session. At the time of writing, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), which tracks the S&P 500 index, was up 0.3%, while the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) gained 0.39%. Retail sentiment around the S&P 500 ETF on Stocktwits was in the ‘neutral’ territory.
