Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

Ethereum is currently the subject of intense debate among market participants as the asset tests critical support levels amid shifting institutional interest and broader geopolitical tensions. The community remains highly polarized, with active discussions focused on the launch of new staking ETFs, concerns over institutional accumulation, and divergent technical outlooks regarding potential breakout or retest scenarios.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Jumia Technologies AG (JMIA), Africa’s largest online retail platform, has reportedly attracted acquisition interest from Axian Telecom, a Mauritius-based telecom provider with a focus on the African market.&nbsp;According to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-01/e-commerce-firm-jumia-said-to-draw-takeover-interest-from-axian?srnd=phx-technology">report</a>, sources familiar with the discussions say Axian recently secured $600 million in funding, earmarked in part to support a potential purchase of Jumia.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/JMIA">Jumia Technologies stock</a> traded over 7% higher on Tuesday morning after the report.While Axian has been increasing its stake in Jumia, reaching 8% ownership as of May, sources caution that negotiations are ongoing and may not result in a finalized agreement.&nbsp;Jumia, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, currently has a market valuation of nearly $500 million. The deal, if completed, could result in Jumia being taken private, the report suggested.Jumia, which launched in Nigeria in 2012, became Africa’s first startup to surpass a $1 billion valuation. Tencent Holdings’&nbsp;ADRs (TCEHY) rose 4% on Wednesday after the Chinese tech giant reported revenue that exceeded Wall Street’s expectations, driven by a rebound in its gaming division and growth in AI-powered advertising.The stock jumped more than 4% in midday trade.The company reported first-quarter (Q1) revenue of 180 billion yuan ($24.97 billion), topping analyst estimates of $24.2 billion, according to Koyfin. However, net profit fell short, coming in at 47.8 billion yuan ($6.3 billion) versus expectations of $8.23 billion.Tencent credited the performance to easing regulatory pressure in China’s gaming sector.&nbsp;Domestic gaming revenue rose 24% year-on-year (YoY) to 42.9 billion yuan, while international gaming revenue climbed 23% to 16.6 billion yuan. Titles like ‘Dungeon &amp; Fighter Mobile’ and ‘Delta Force’ helped drive momentum.Marketing services revenue rose 22% to 17.7 billion yuan, supported by AI-enhanced advertising technology that enabled more precise targeting.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the FinTech and Business Services segment, which includes consumer loans, cloud, and wealth management, posted revenue of 27.6 billion yuan, up 16%.Tencent CEO Pony Ma said the company’s AI capabilities are already contributing tangibly to the business, “such as performance advertising and evergreen games.”&nbsp;“We also stepped up our spending on new AI opportunities, such as the Yuanbao application and AI in Weixin,” he added during the earnings call, using the Chinese name for WeChat. “We expect these strategic AI investments will create value for users and society, and generate substantial incremental returns for us over the longer term.”The comments come amid&nbsp;Tencent ramping up its artificial intelligence spending. In March, it committed a low double-digit percentage of its projected 2025 revenue to capital expenditure, focused primarily on AI. Tencent Revenue Tops Forecasts On Gaming Surge, AI Ad Gains As Stock Rallies

Africa-based e-commerce platform Jumia Technologies’ shares dove nearly 48% on Tuesday after the firm announced its intention to raise funds by issuing over 20.22 million American Depositary Shares (ADS).The firm intends to use the proceeds to help support customer acquisition, expansion of supplier base, scaling its logistics network and improving marketing and vendor technology. It also cited general corporate purposes.However, retail investors are shrugging-off the fundraise news while concentrating on its improving operating metrics.Jumia Technologies’ Q2 revenue declined 17% year-over-year (YoY) to $36.50 million but operating loss narrowed to $20.20 million compared to $22.10 million in the same period a year ago.The firm said its quarterly cash burn declined 55% driven by effective cost management and reduction in finance costs. Its finance costs for the second quarter were mainly influenced by losses recognized on the sale of financial assets. Jumia also reported a 35% jump in its gross merchandise value (GMV) at $170.10 million (constant currency basis).Notably, 67% of the company’s liquidity position was held in U.S. dollars as of the second quarter of 2024.
