Sensex jumps 2,073 points; rupee logs best single-day gain since 2018

Mumbai, Feb 3 : Indian stock markets witnessed a strong rally on Tuesday as investors cheered the finalisation of the long-awaited India–US trade deal. Both benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, posted sharp gains -- reflecting positive sentiment across Dalal Street. By the end of the trading session, the Sensex jumped 2,072.67 points, or 2.54 per cent, to close at 83,739.13. Meanwhile, the Nifty climbed 639.15 points, or 2.55 per cent, to settle at 25,727.55. “The key support zone remains at 25,500–25,600 (gap support), while 25,900–26,000 acts as a major psychological and supply resistance area,” an analyst stated. The surge came after US President Donald Trump announced that the agreement would lower reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent. The move boosted confidence among market participants, who expect improved trade ties to benefit Indian companies and the broader economy. Several heavyweight stocks led the rally on the Sensex. Shares of Adani Ports, Bajaj Finance, IndiGo, and PowerGrid recorded strong gains during the day.

The allocation marks a 15% increase over the Rs 6.81 lakh crore provided in the previous financial year, underscoring the government’s priority on national security amid evolving geopolitical challenges. A significant highlight of the Budget is the sharp rise in capital expenditure for defence procurement. The Armed forces have been allocated Rs 2.19 lakh crore for the purchase of military hardware, a 21.8% jump from the Rs 1.80 lakh crore earmarked in FY 2025–26. This enhanced capital outlay is aimed at accelerating force modernisation, strengthening air defence systems and inducting next-generation platforms across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Indian shares rise on EU deal; defence, infrastructure stocks gain ahead of budget

BENGALURU: India’s equity benchmarks rose on Wednesday, extending gains from the previous day’s landmark trade deal with the European Union, while capital expenditure-linked stocks jumped ahead of the federal budget. The Nifty 50 rose 0.66% to 25,342.75, while the BSE Sensex added 0.6% to 82,344.68. The benchmark indexes have risen about 1% in two sessions. The EU trade deal signed on Tuesday scrapped all tariffs on more than 90% of Indian goods. “This deal opens a high-value consumer market for Indian exporters while positioning India as Europe’s most reliable long-term growth partner…. (It also) reshapes capital flows (and) strengthens investor confidence,” said Amit Jain, co-founder of Ashika Global Family Office Services. Thirteen of the 16 major sectors logged gains. Energy and metal stocks led the rise with a 4.2% and 2.3% gain, respectively, on higher crude oil and base metal prices. Broader mid-caps and small-caps rose 1.7% and 2.3%, respectively. “Sectors that are expected to be in focus in the budget, like railways and defence, have done well today.
