In a major push towards strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a Rs 1,950 crore contract with state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of advanced Mountain Radars for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The agreement was formalised in New Delhi on March 31, 2026, in the presence of senior officials from both the MoD and BEL, under the government’s flagship Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives. The contract has been awarded under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, reinforcing the Centre’s focus on promoting domestic defence production. It includes the supply of two Mountain Radars along with associated equipment and necessary infrastructure, tailored for deployment in strategically important and difficult mountainous regions. The Mountain Radar system has been indigenously designed and developed by the Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) of DRDO, showcasing India’s growing technological capabilities in advanced defence systems.
