Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. He warned that Iran "will be hit very hard" if the fighting keeps going.<h2 class="st-heading-2">International Oil Prices Rally</h2>Amid the geopolitical backdrop, international oil prices surged 35.6% in a single week, while large quantities of gold stranded in Dubai were being sold at a discount. Additionally, the US Dollar Index (DX-Y.NYB) increased to around $98.&nbsp;Analysts monitoring the conflict said the energy market remained highly sensitive to developments in the region. Business influencer Mario Nawfal&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/MarioNawfal/status/2030221801171878229?s=20">said</a> Iran’s missile and drone attacks had dropped sharply since the start of the war, adding that U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting launchers, command systems, and drone facilities had disrupted parts of Iran’s military capabilities.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Energy Markets Tick Higher</h2>The rising conflict has shaken up markets worldwide, particularly in energy.Brent crude oil prices rose above $94 per barrel, the highest level since November 2022, as fears that the conflict could affect global oil supply. Prices for crude oil worldwide have risen about 36% in the last week as tensions between countries have grown. Crude prices had their biggest weekly gain in almost four years after the U.S.–Iran conflict stopped shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for about 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products every day.The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important chokepoints in the world for energy, and any problems with traffic through it can quickly affect the price and supply of oil worldwide.&nbsp;According to market data, shares of major oil and gas exploration and production companies went up during the last trading session. The Oil &amp; Gas E&amp;P sector gained about 0.7% on the day, while the S&amp;P 500 as a whole fell about 1.3%.The sector, which includes companies that explore and produce oil and natural gas, now has a total market value of about $719 billion across 78 companies.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Global Uncertainty Index Rises&nbsp;</h2>In the International Monetary Fund's Finance &amp; Development <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.imf.org/en/publications/fandd/issues/2026/03/high-debt-hard-choices-era-dabla-norris">magazine</a>, economists Era Dabla-Norris and Rodrigo Valdes said that governments are facing high debt and rising borrowing costs, "can no longer defer hard fiscal choices."<figure class="image"><a class="st-link-external" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/WUIUSA#" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/fredgraph_png_933f91363a.webp" alt="fredgraph.png" width="1320" height="465"></a><figcaption>Word Uncertainty Index Hits All-Time High As Of Jan 15, 2026. At the time of writing, it had pared some of the gains and was trading 3.1% higher at $6.12 per pound.Benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange, after breaking above $14,000 a tonne for the first time earlier in the session, was up 4.7% at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Are Analysts Saying?</h2>Not all analysts are bullish. President Donald Trump’s confirmation of a 50% tariff on copper imports sent U.S. copper futures and mining stocks – including Freeport-McMoran (FCX) and Southern Copper (SCCO) – sharply higher Tuesday. He also said that tariffs targeting the pharmaceutical and semiconductor sectors would be next on the docket.“We’re going to be announcing pharmaceuticals, chips, and various couple of other things — big one,” Trump told reporters at a White House cabinet meeting. “Now today we’re doing copper… I believe the tariff on copper, we’re going to make it 50%.”U.S. copper futures jumped more than 10% on the news, while&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/FCX">Freeport-McMoran’s stock</a> rallied nearly 5%. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around Freeport-McMoRan edged higher within ‘bullish’ territory as chatter jumped to ‘high’ levels from ‘normal’ a day ago.&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/SCCO">Southern Copper’s stock</a> also gained more than 1% following the announcement, and&nbsp;In February, the Trump administration launched a Section 232 investigation into copper imports, citing potential national security concerns. That probe is due to conclude by November.During the cabinet meeting, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins also raised alarms about Chinese ownership of U.S. farmland, calling it a “massive national security issue.”&nbsp;She said China has been acquiring land near U.S. military bases and urged Congress to ban such purchases. “There’s an executive order coming and some other things coming behind that,” she added.Despite the tough stance on trade and foreign investment, Trump said U.S.-China relations remain stable. “They’ve been very fair on our trade deal, honestly,” he said, adding that he maintains regular communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I’m getting along with President Xi very well. We speak often.”Markets remained mixed after Trump’s cabinet meeting.
