MU Stock Surges Over 5% Premarket: What’s Driving It Higher?

The first dedicated fund tracking memory chip stocks has gained 90% since April 2 and has added roughly 1,700% more&nbsp;watchers on Stocktwits during this period.However,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DRAM">DRAM</a> dropped 5% in overnight trading heading into Tuesday, tracking declines in South Korean chip majors Samsung Electronics and&nbsp;SK Hynix – and that’s a key risk for ETF investors to keep&nbsp;an eye on.DRAM has an outsized exposure to the two companies. Samsung and&nbsp;SK Hynix account for 24.99% and 24.22% of the fund’s holdings, according to its&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.roundhillinvestments.com/assets/pdfs/dram_factsheet.pdf">factsheet</a>. The third-largest is Micron Technology, accounting for 23.83% of the total.Arguably, developments on the other side&nbsp;of the&nbsp;world, business or geopolitical, would have a large impact on DRAM’s performance. And such was the case on Tuesday.<h2 class="st-heading-2">South Korean Official’s Remarks Stir Confusion</h2>Late Monday local time, South Korean presidential policy chief Kim Yong-beom’s&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.facebook.com/yongbeom.kim.35/">remarks</a> on Facebook, in which&nbsp;he discussed how chip companies are generating enormous profits and fueling record tax revenue for the government, triggered confusion over whether the government plans to impose an additional tax on AI-linked profits.“The nation should pay dividends,” he said. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index tumbled as much as 5.1% on Tuesday before trimming declines after Kim clarified that he planned to use “excess tax revenue” created by the AI boom, rather than impose a fresh windfall levy on corporate earnings. In recent weeks, upbeat quarterly reports from chip giants Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, along with hyperscalers Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon, have reinforced that AI demand and data center buildouts remain on a sharp upward trajectory — a trend that bodes well for the memory chip sector.SanDisk gained 32%, and Western Digital rose 11% last week. The companies reported upbeat reports on April 30 and May 1, respectively; the stocks initially fell before rising&nbsp;sharply in the coming days. Targeted at AI, cloud, hyperscale, and enterprise workloads, it delivers major efficiency gains, requiring roughly 82% fewer racks and far less physical space and power than HDD-based alternatives.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Retail Backs Memory Upcycle</h2>Despite the sharp gains, traders believe the momentum in these stocks is still in its early stages.&nbsp;“From 2013-2015, Micron was actually worth significantly more than Nvidia, but that was before Nvidia got into the data center business. As AI workloads become more memory and CPU intensive ($INTC $AMD), this ratio can easily get back to ~40% again where it was for so many years. There's a reason $MU and $SNDK have been bought up like crazy on even the slightest of dips all year long,”&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/BullseyeGains/message/652894827">posted</a> a trader on Stocktwits.Another&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/Zuko2001/message/652890697">wrote</a> that memory stocks are “not even close to being overvalued with this new paradigm shift in non cyclical memory demand” and forecast Micron to soon reach $1,000, or 34% higher from its last close.“Micron $MU needs to hit approximately $886 to join the Trillion market cap club. Analysts on the other hand expect the stock prices to cool; on an average, they have a $556.05 price target on Micron (27% downside), $1,399 for SanDisk (10% downside) and $495.68 for Western Digital (3% upside)Micron has been&nbsp;capturing a larger share of retail trading overall over the past few months, according to a CNBC report. MU, SNDK, WDC: Memory Stocks Rally Overnight, Micron Eyes $1 Trillion Club

Tight memory chip supplies and rising prices driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers have sparked a supercycle for memory chip makers. 

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>BofA raises STX price target to $700 from $605 per share.&nbsp;</li><li>WDC price target raised to $495 from $415.</li><li>The newly launched DRAM memory ETF has gained nearly 50% since its April 2 launch.</li></ul>Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate Technology (STX) shares gained on Monday after Bank of America raised their share price targets, citing a clear path to higher earnings going ahead as soaring use of artificial intelligence pushes demand for memory chips.&nbsp;"Hard disk drive supply remains tight as manufacturers are not adding unit capacity, and we see this as a structural change," wrote BofA in an investor note. "As such, we continue to see demand exceeding supply and see continued scope for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to raise prices."BofA increased its price target on Seagate to $700 from $605 and&nbsp;on Western Digital to $495 from $415. BofA finds that both companies could see significantly higher earnings per share by 2028 in a bull-case scenario.&nbsp;Surging demand from AI data centers has driven shortages and price gains across the industry, which includes memory chip stocks, pushing their stocks higher so far this year.&nbsp;“You get this flywheel of more data that’s being used, more data that’s being created, more data that’s being stored,” Kris Sennesael, Western Digital’s chief financial officer, had told Barron’s earlier this year.&nbsp;The newly launched memory chip ETF (DRAM) crossed $1 billion in assets under management and has gained nearly 50% since its launch on April 2.&nbsp;BoFA Earnings And Share Price Estimates For WDC And STXBofA estimates 2028 earnings of $29 per share, up from just over $10 on an adjusted basis in 2025 for Seagate. In a bull-case scenario, the brokerage sees potential earnings of $45 per share.For Western Digital, it estimates earnings of $20 per share in 2028, up from $6.93 per share in 2025. The fund charges a 0.65% annual management fee.&nbsp;The fund is designed to provide pure-play exposure to companies involved in semiconductor memory, such as HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), DRAM, and NAND flash—all of which are critical to the current AI infrastructure build-out, according to Roundhill.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Do Analysts Say?</h2>SanDisk has seen a host of recent analyst action.
