Canada is looking to collaborate more closely with Mexico over a range of issues, including security and trade, its senior ministers said on Tuesday, following a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.According to a Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-06/canada-and-mexico-to-cooperate-as-free-traders-facing-us-tariffs">report</a>, citing Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, the two countries agreed to “build a work plan” covering “resilient supply chains, port-to-port lines of trade, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, energy security.” &nbsp;The meeting between Anand, the Canadian finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Sheinbaum reportedly lasted over an hour. The two ministers are also expected to meet business leaders while in Mexico.According to the report, Anand noted that Mexico plays a critical role in the global economy, and Canada recognizes this and wants to leverage it to the advantage of the Canadian domestic economy. While Champagne reportedly said that Canada offers “a lot of opportunities to Mexico when it comes to critical minerals and the supply chain around that,” and energy security, before adding that both nations are “free traders.”The neighbors are seeking closer ties at a time when their relationship with the U.S. has soured due to President Donald Trump’s tariff salvo.  Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne reportedly said that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) is an “essential element of competitiveness in North America.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa was disappointed over U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest move to raise tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% from 25%, but would carry on trade negotiations with its southern neighbor.The new tariffs were imposed by Trump in an executive order on Thursday, which said that Canada “failed to cooperate” with the U.S. to curb the flow of illicit drugs like fentanyl. However, the tariffs do not apply to goods compliant with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.In a statement <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/MarkJCarney/status/1951136566509801740">posted</a> on X, Carney said that while the Canadian government is disappointed by the tariff move, it will remain committed to the USMCA. He added that his government will work to protect jobs and invest in “industry competitiveness” for sectors such as autos, lumber, and steel, which will be the most affected by the tariffs. Trump’s warnings come after Canada joined a list of countries, including the UK and France, that have pledged to recognize the Palestinian state.

Canada became the latest nation to receive a letter from President Donald Trump over the fate of tariffs if a bilateral deal isn’t struck by the Aug. 1 deadline.The screenshot of the letter shared by the president on his Truth Social account warned that a 35% levy will be imposed on Canadian products&nbsp;entering U.S. shores. As was outlined in the letters sent to the other nations earlier this week, he clarified that this rate is&nbsp;in addition to the sectoral tariffs in place.Trump also&nbsp;reiterated that transshipped goods will incur additional levies, while companies can avoid the steep tariffs if they decide to build or manufacture products in the U.S. Any retaliation will be met with tariffs raised to the same magnitude, the president said.&nbsp;Trump highlighted the steep 400% tariffs Canada charges on U.S. dairy imports as he discussed its North American neighbor’s tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers that have served to push deficits to unsustainable levels.“If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will perhaps consider an adjustment to this letter,” he added.Trump’s recent spate of letters, though creating uncertainty in the minds of traders, hasn’t deterred the market’s climb to a record high. Canada currently enjoys tariff exemption for goods traded under the USMCA, which came into effect on July 1, 2020. The POTUS highlighted the steep 400% tariffs Canada charges on U.S. dairy imports as he discussed its North American neighbor’s tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers that have served to push deficits to unsustainable levels.

Canada could soon propose building an oil pipeline to the country’s west coast as a project of national importance, Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an interview with a newspaper.“I would think, given the scale of the economic opportunity, the resources we have, the expertise we have, that it is highly, highly likely that we will have an oil pipeline,” Carney said in the interview with the Calgary Herald published on Sunday.Carney’s comments follow the Canadian Parliament's passage of the C-5 bill, which earmarks several projects as key to national growth, accelerates their development, and removes internal trade barriers. The company has assets under management worth $27 billion as of May 31, 2025.After the deal’s close, expected at the end of the calendar year, Burgundy will operate as part of BMO Wealth Management, and CEO Robert Sankey will continue to lead the business.“In our view, the purchase price of 2.3% of assets under management represents reasonable value to expand BMO’s high-net-worth client base,” John Aiken, equity analyst with Jefferies Financial Group, said, according to Bloomberg.BMO will pay about the purchase price in common shares, including a C$125 million holdback to be paid subject to Burgundy maintaining certain assets under management 18 months post-closing.The lender’s wealth-management unit had about 6,400 employees and C$438 billion under management as of April 30, according to the Bloomberg report.
