Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. The Mexican government is reportedly planning to raise tariffs on imports from China as part of its 2026 budget proposal next month in a bid to protect domestic industries and appease the Trump administration.According to a Bloomberg News <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-27/mexico-plans-to-raise-tariffs-on-chinese-goods-in-2026-budget-proposal?srnd=homepage-americas">report</a>, citing people familiar with the matter, Mexico plans to increase tariffs on imports, including cars, textiles, and plastics. Mexico Raises Tariff Heat On China To Defend Factories, Keep Trump Happy: Report

Canada is looking to collaborate more closely with Mexico over a range of issues, including security and trade, its senior ministers said on Tuesday, following a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.According to a Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-06/canada-and-mexico-to-cooperate-as-free-traders-facing-us-tariffs">report</a>, citing Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, the two countries agreed to “build a work plan” covering “resilient supply chains, port-to-port lines of trade, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, energy security.” &nbsp;The meeting between Anand, the Canadian finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Sheinbaum reportedly lasted over an hour. The two ministers are also expected to meet business leaders while in Mexico.According to the report, Anand noted that Mexico plays a critical role in the global economy, and Canada recognizes this and wants to leverage it to the advantage of the Canadian domestic economy. While Champagne reportedly said that Canada offers “a lot of opportunities to Mexico when it comes to critical minerals and the supply chain around that,” and energy security, before adding that both nations are “free traders.”The neighbors are seeking closer ties at a time when their relationship with the U.S. has soured due to President Donald Trump’s tariff salvo. Barring China, the two North American countries are the only ones facing U.S. tariffs on national security grounds for the inflow of drugs into the U.S.While U.S. government data has shown that only a tiny amount of fentanyl crosses into the U.S. through the Canadian border, Trump raised the tariffs on Canada to 35% earlier this month, citing its failure to curb the flow of drugs, a charge Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has denied.However, Trump and Sheinbaum extended a tariff truce between the two countries for another 90 days. Canada has retaliated against Trump’s tariffs by imposing levies on U.S. goods, while Mexico hasn’t. Tomatoes could become pricier in the U.S. as the 2019 agreement suspending the “Antidumping Duty Investigation” on fresh tomatoes from Mexico expired.With the U.S. government deciding against renewing the suspension, it issued an antidumping duty order, resulting in a 17.09% duty on tomato imports from Mexico, the Commerce Department said in a statement.&nbsp;Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, “Mexico remains one of our greatest allies, but for far too long our farmers have been crushed by unfair trade practices that undercut pricing on produce like tomatoes. That ends today.”“This rule change is in line with President [Donald] Trump’s trade policies and approach with Mexico.”&nbsp;On Friday, Trump shared a snapshot of a letter sent to Mexico, communicating a 30% tariff if a trade deal is not reached by Aug. 1.&nbsp;As Trump’s tariff announcements reverberate through the market, the stock market has shown an uneven recovery. Overall, the trend has been positive, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY)</a>, an exchange-traded fund tracking the broader S&amp;P 500 Index, rising 7.25% year-to-date.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/EWW">iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW)</a> has gained a steeper 30%.The antidumping duty was first imposed following representation by the domestic fresh tomatoes industry in 1996, claiming that “it was being materially injured by dumped Mexican imports.”After the agreement was put in place, there have been five suspensions.
