India’s Hero MotoCorp names Harshavardhan Chitale as new CEO

Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler maker, has named Harshavardhan Chitale, who heads Dutch lighting maker Signify’s professional business, as CEO effective Jan. 5, 2026. Chitale will replace Vikram Kasbekar, who was named acting CEO after Niranjan Gupta resigned earlier this year. Kasbekar will continue as Chief Technology Officer, Hero said on Monday. Chitale’s appointment will accelerate the ‘Splendor’ motorcycle maker’s push into electric and emerging mobility, Chairman Pawan Munjal said in a press release. Max Healthcare, IndiGo parent to enter India’s Nifty 50 index after rejig, NSE says Chitale previously led Philips Lighting India through its spin-off into a standalone company. He has also held senior roles at HCL Infosystems and Honeywell Automation India. Hero MotoCorp shares were trading flat after the news.

The Nifty Auto index surged over 2.2% in early trade on Thursday, led by index heavyweights Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) and Eicher Motors, after India cleared tax rate revisions for the sector.The GST Council on Wednesday approved a tax restructuring that simplifies the rates to just two slabs: 5% and 18%. The revised rates will come into effect from September 22.For the automotive sector, this results in rate cuts across various segments, including motorcycles and hybrid cars.GST SlashedGST on petrol, petrol-hybrid, LPG, diesel, and diesel-hybrid cars with an engine capacity of up to 1500 cc and a length of up to 4000 mm, CNG cars up to 1200 cc and 4000 mm, and motorcycles up to 350 cc, has been reduced from 28% to 18%.The majority of vehicle sales in the country fall under this category.The tax on three-wheelers has also been reduced from 28% to 12% while GST on tractors has been cut from 12% to 5%.GST has been increased to 40% for larger and premium passenger vehicles, covering petrol or hybrid cars above 1200cc or longer than 4,000 mm, diesel or hybrid cars above 1500cc or 4,000 mm, as well as motorcycles exceeding 350cc.The council decided to retain the 5% GST rate on electric vehicles (EVs).Imported armoured luxury sedans will be exempt from GST only in rare cases. Indian PM Modi’s tax reform set to slash levies on shampoos, hybrid cars, TVs

NEW DELHI: India plans to cut consumption tax by at least 10 percentage points on nearly 175 products ranging from shampoos and hybrid cars to consumer electronics, two sources said, revealing new details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tax overhaul. The biggest reform of the goods and services tax system in nearly a decade comes amid strained trade ties with the U.S., with Modi making repeated calls for increased use of Indian products. Modi first flagged his reform plan last month on Independence Day when he said he would make daily products cheaper for people in the world’s fifth largest economy. His proposal includes reducing goods and services tax (GST) on consumer items such as talcum powder, toothpaste and shampoo from 18% to 5%, which is likely to boost sales at companies like Hindustan Unilever and Godrej Industries. Air conditioners and television sets could see GST drop from 28% to 18% ahead of the Diwali shopping season starting in October, when brands like Samsung, LG Electronics, and Sony dominate sales.
