Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

(UNH) plans to refund profits from its Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, famously known as Obamacare, to customers in 2026, a move that comes as Congress debates whether to extend enhanced tax credits that support those plans.The announcement was made by chief executive officer Stephen Hemsley in a prepared testimony released ahead of his appearance before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Energy &amp; Commerce, Subcommittee on Health, later this week.Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to extend ACA subsidies for another three years. The measure passed 230–196, with support from 213 Democrats and 17 Republicans, renewing Obamacare tax credits that had expired at the end of 2025. The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration.Insurers have faced mounting pressure from President Donald Trump, who has opposed extending the additional ACA subsidies.“Though UnitedHealthcare is a relatively small participant in the individual ACA market, we will voluntarily eliminate and rebate our profits this year for these coverages,” Hemsley’s statement read.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Thin Margins</h2>UnitedHealth executives have previously described ACA margins as thin. Chief Financial Officer Wayne DeVeydt said in November that the business was expected to generate “low single-digit” margins. The company also raised ACA premiums by an average of 25% for 2026.Hemsley urged lawmakers to consider broader reforms, including changes to health savings accounts, site-of-care rules, patent laws, and drug pricing, to help make healthcare more affordable and sustainable over time.In the prepared testimony, Hemsley emphasized broader cost pressures across the U.S. healthcare system, noting that healthcare spending per person has surged over the past 25 years, driven by rising hospital prices, prescription drug costs, and specialty care. The acquisition is expected to boost the company’s expansion plans.In the second-quarter (Q2), the company is targeting completion of Phase 1 at the Cedar Port Innovation Center, which will serve as its operational headquarters, technology hub, and R&amp;D facility and the “central command” for renewable fuel commercialization.Based on current plans, Phase 2 of the waste plastics-to-renewable fuels and chemicals plant is expected to be completed in 2029, the company added. It anticipates commercial production and revenue to begin the same year. (UNH) shares have drawn heavy interest from retail investors on Friday morning as it appears set to clear a key hurdle at $340 following the U.S. Senate’s rejection of Republican and Democratic proposals to address expiring healthcare subsidies.The $340 mark coincides with the stock’s 50-day moving average (50-DMA), currently at around $340.71 – a key hurdle which, if crossed, will be considered as a positive signal for the short term. Although ACA premiums are expected to increase and tax credits are ending this year, investors had largely priced in the impact. They reportedly viewed the Republican plan as the bigger risk.That plan would eliminate the enhanced tax credits and instead put the funds into Health Savings Accounts for those buying bronze or “catastrophic” ACA plans, providing $1,000 for individuals aged 18 to 49, and $1,500 for those aged 50 to 64.<h2 class="st-heading-2">UnitedHealth’s Financial Plans</h2>Last month, UnitedHealth launched a three-year turnaround plan aimed at restoring profitability and what the new CFO, Wayne DeVite, described as the company’s “swagger” by 2027. The strategy includes dropping unprofitable Medicare Advantage and ACA plans, and sharpening its focus on U.S. operations.UnitedHealth also priced its 2026 plans with a higher 10% medical-cost trend to address inflation pressures. As part of the overhaul, the company plans to sell non-core international assets, reduce debt, and resume share buybacks in late 2026.
